Ok, so i decided to install Vista ultimate yesterday (30.04.08) & everything went swell, i formatted the HD before installing aswell as i wanted a completely new install.
Did a few updates via windows update...
Left computer running overnight & woke up to find that it turned itself off!

I turned the computer on & all i was getting was a blank black screen with an amber light, like it was on standby. So i tried another monitor & the same thing was happening.

I tried using a different power cord for my psu, unplugged all the connections in my motherboard & then put them all back in & still the same thing.
No post, no screen, amber light...

I tried onboard graphics, still the same thing.

I had no idea what to do so i moved all the components into another case & tried inserting hardware 1 by 1.

When i got to inserting the ram i noticed that i finally got a picture on my screen with 1 stick in the DDRII 1 slot & a POST BEEP! but nothing with both in the DDRII 1 + DDRII 2 slots, so i tried the reverse & tried 1 stick in the DDRII 1 slot then in with both sticks in the DDRII 1 & 2 slots, with this the same thing happened for both, No picture, No POST, amber light on monitor.

Narrowing it down it must either be the 2nd ram slot on the MoBo or 1 of the sticks as it doesn't go to POST on one of them.

The ram was part of a new build back in NOV '07 & i had the same type of thing happen on powering the new build for the first time, except back then i was using Windows XP but my comp didnt turn itself off as it was a new build obviously & i hadn't at all used the OS on it, i solved the problem last time by increasing the ram voltage on the MoBo from 1.8v to 2.1v. but that took a few days to do because like this time the BIOS JUST HANGS & i had to prey that it *** get past the "hanging" & then i can get into the bios, which it did eventually!

I have tried taking the CMOS battery out & doing the reset, all to no avail...

TO clarify:

POST with 1 beep with 1 of 1 stick of ram
No POST no picture with both
No POST no picture when trying ram stick 2 of 2

I cannot get into bios at all as the system just hangs on the POST screen, after 1 beep

Please help as i have no idea what else the problem *** be or what else i *** try.

Only thing i can think of is to try again in the morning & prey it boots at least to bios so i can then check/set the RAM VOLTAGES as i assume resetting the BIOS *** reset them.

I think that it has to be either the MoBo or the ram stick, most likely is the ram as it doesn't make sense to me-why one *** boot to the "POST hang" and the other doesn't...

Maybe the MoBo & 1 stick or ram are faulty... that *** suck a bit

I've purchased some generic run of the mill cheap ram which should hopefully be getting here MON/Tues that i can use to hopefully get me into bios & then reset the ram Voltage, then run a Memory test on the ram to see wtf is up

i have the same ocz ram, ive had a few dodgy sticks, had to rma some

Now ive got 4 sticks that run fine in xp , but when i try them on vista, only boots with 3. Bizzare stuff.

Have ya, were they dead when ya got em or had you had them all awhile before they died on ya?

Maybe i should go back to XP then... hahaha, when i get what is wrong sorted!
I've heard loads of horror stories about vista!

I've heard loads of horror stories about vista!

They were bad when i got them. its odd how vista could be funny with memory and xp not.

ye, is a bit...
They worked like a charm until i installed vista - Coincidence or what!.?.!.?...

Hopefully my generic ram will come tomoz & i can get into bios & see what's up :)

Vista has a patch dl for 4gig or more ram ;) (B929777 that's x64 version can't rem x86 patch # )

Sometimes 4gig or even 8gig load vista fine without the patch

Other times you need to use 1 stick then patch in vista (sp1 contains the patch btw) and then add other sticks

The hit or miss with ram in vista as far as i read and my experience is rig to rig differences and of course differring ram

Hiya,

Edit: Forgot the most basic lol Have you checked to see if there's an updated Bios revision ?????

Well i had 8gig (4x2Ghz) of 8500 HTC Reaper that was fubar though i could sometimes get it to post and passed memtest (i guess like 99.9% of things in life nothings 100% certain, Exception is death though that's a 100% certainty ;) )

Stuff happens, Maybe just the ram playing up after all

I mean, If it's all fine in xp and not in vista it would seem to be something vista os based but my ocz played up in both xp and vista and also a dualboot xp/vista install

Maybe someone knows for certain but doesn't xp and vista differ in the way ram is used and xp is more tollerent towards ram than vista ???

Ohh did your other ram arrive ??

If that works in vista maybe time to sort rma, After all if something don't work in vista but does in xp (hardware i mean such as ram) why keep it when other makes of similar stuff works fine in all OS's (don't make sense to me having memory hold you back from using vista lol)

Gonna trawl the searches for memory usage info

Hope ya get it sorted anyways ;)

Ciao

PS: Just for jollies DL the memory patch and try to install, If it's in it will say not needed etc, Maybe it's not included in the sp1 you got ?? (longshot i know lol) (it's in my sp1 that i use after re-installing vista ultimate x64)

Also have you got latest mobo drivers ??

That is a good point actually, quite a lot of stuff i can try that you suggested :D
cheerz for that, much appreciated!

Nah my ram didn't come tuesday but apparently it will today (Wed) so will try that & see what happens "Fingerz crossed"

Haven't updated the MoBo drivers in awhile, did think about updating the bios when i get it back in action but read somewhere that if you update the bios that it is no longer under warranty/RMA or whatever which i didn't look into yet... soundz a bit stupid if you ask me!

Gonna DL the memory patch & try that, might aswell :D

I am using the 32bit vista & can get my hands on 64bit if it is necessary , i did read that there are more issues with the 64bit version hence me choosing the 32 one.

Hiya,
Hopefully you've got new ram to try ?

If i had a choice (i do as i've got ultimate) i would go dualboot either seperate drives or single/raid with XP and x64 vista

Many things like driver problems are almost a thing of the past now luckily

The new windows 8 or whatever M$ are gonna call it will only rollout in x64 version so if you can get into the x64 routine i would

Lots of old games/utils etc still work in x64 but if you have old hardware eg: kb/creative card etc etc i would hold on and use x86 version

Easiest way is to check for all your rig items for x64 drivers, If you can get them all for x64 i say go for it

Well post back when you try new ram (fingers crossed, myself i'm sure ocz could be the problem) and don't flash mobo bios wihtout pc being stable !!

As for bios flashing invalidating your warranty well that's weird lol

As long as you save the one that's in you can always flash back if ever an rma was needed (what do some companies think bios updates are for !!! maybe they think bios updates are the spawn of satan or some black magic that hurts a pc lol)

Hope you come back with working rig

Ok, so new RAM arrived today (WED) & worked on 1st boot :D
Updated vista, updated bios to REV5

Updating bios scared the be-jesus out of me... hahaha

Installed all the drivers that i beleived were out of date, + any i missed when i installed vista...

Did look for the x86 32bit RAM update patch that "Defiance_co" suggested but didn't find it so if any one knows the name i'd be thrilled to have that! :)

Got all updates i could find installed, including one for my MoBo off of MS update which looks promising, once all that was done with countless amounts of reseting i decided to give battle for middle earth a whirl on high perfomance using the 1gb of ram... mostly coz i missed it but wanted to see if it would crash as empire earth III did when i tried it on vista, anyhow it worked great!

Haven't yet tried my OCZ 2x1gb ram yet, had a hectic day yesterday, lol.

So hopefully this evening, when i get back from spending money i'm gonna up the voltage for the ram & see what happens.?.?.?...

I'm praying it will work but then again not too bothered if i have to RMA it

just read around seems like OCZ got a problem with vista when 2 sticks of ram are installed on set up

Tried doing the vista SP1 update as it includes the KB929777 patch but that didnt work so tried the patch you linked to & that wouldn't install either!

I'm thinking i might just do the dualboot thing but with 64bit version & XP :D

pretty much a new install so like you say i might aswell get into the rhythm of using it, plus i like XP :) hehehe

aint got around to putting my 2x1gb ocz back in yet as the KB929777 patch wouldn't install...
