After just watching This is England, and seeing the way that i developed a genuine care about a number of characters,

i realised how different it was to so many american films that i watch..

they just dont compare at all. America produces some very entertaining stuff but it just lacks depth compared to films from other nations.

I admit that im a huge fan of some american tv series (Frasier mainly), however i really do think that they lack somewhat in character development.

Its not just Shane Meadows films that do this to me, its a number of films including Human Traffic for example.

I felt genuinely concerned about a number of characters in This is England, and this isnt the only british film that does this.

Why do american films lack this depth of character :(

films yes, but TV id say it was the opposite. Stuff like Lost, Heroes, BSG far outstrip British drama in terms of character development imo.

I think you are probably right to be honest mate. I love tv shows like Dexter, The Shield, House, Lost, Heroes..

Its such a shame that they churn out movies so fast that they seem to overlook some of the most important aspects.

its like some of the films that were taken from japan and remade in hollywood... like the ring, the grudge etc... the japanese ring actually made the viewer have some concern for the character because it built up a bit of a knowledge/phsyche behind them, but the american counterparts lacked depth

Did you just mention Human Traffic while talking about character development?

Did... did you mean it?

Lol maybe it wasnt a great example, i was thinking of a british film i could relate to on the fly, im not a huge film buff at all.. i liked that dog soldiers film too, maybe i just relate more because im british too hehe.

I have a problem putting my feelings into writing.

but i do feel that characters sometimes dont get the attention they should within american movies

I really think in America that we're starting to see TV become bigger in relation to films. Some of the actors in their TV shows Id say were of far higher quality than the ones in the films.

I'd say the best any region has to offer are all pretty comparable tbh.

Compare the best we have to offer with some of the **** the US comes out with and it's obvious things won't seem to be on the same level.

I just think it's more a fact that more stuff gets made in the US so we see more rubbish. To get funding and marketing in the UK you have a have a really good film.

Human Traffic is not exactly deep. But the scene in the pub near the end where Danny Dyer states that he needs to clean up made me a fan of his. It just rang true - the guy's obviously done his share of drugs.

America wins if you ask me, also I'm finding more and more American dramas using actors from all over the globe which helps bring in more audience I would guess.

Heroes and Lost for instance.

I don't really care if the actors are all American though, but it's always cool to see the odd Brit thrown into the mix.

How can you 'care' about the bunch of racist scummy thugs in that film? Hmm

If youve watched it you would realise that they arent even racist at all in the early part of the film. Its only when one comes out of prison and starts pushing the racism that they get nasty. Its how skinheads were in reality, before any racism kicked off they were about music influences and mod style culture.

none of the characters are actually scummy thugs to be honest. Maybe the leader guy is bad, but he has an element of faith in what hes preaching.

Not seen Human Traffic for years, but I certainly don't remember it being anything like what's been described in this thread... gonna go watch it again, great laugh. :)

Id had some cans of cider last night and was listening to music in the same veign as human traffic, maybe i bigged it up a bit more than it deserved lol.

however i do feel a lot of films britain produces gives characters a bit more of depth.
