More than 10,000 people were killed in a devastating cyclone that hit western Burma on Saturday, Foreign Minister Nyan Win has said on state TV.

Such a horrendous natural event to occur :( 10,000 is such a huge amount to die in such a short space of time. It really puts a perspective on the 'stress' of end of year projects and my current worries.

The fact that it happened at one time in one place, with many negative consequences for the local area that could affect a lot of other people.

140,000 dying spread across the planet is a bit different..

Burmese authorities had refused permission for an American disaster assistance response team to enter.

Meanwhile, Burma's military junta has said a referendum on a new national constitution will go ahead on Saturday. People were "eagerly looking forward to voting", it said.

ye that sounds a good place! they gona get it all sorted out real soon....

140,000 people die every day, what's 10,000 more or less?

Could you further support that statistic so that it is of comparative worth?

Because at present I am making the assumption that you have provided a world wide total, if so, it does make 10,000- some 7% (ish) a very substantial amount of people to lose their lives in a single country.

I can only imagine you are trolling or are an extremely insensitive individual.

Was watching it earlier on News24 :( Many many more will die in the coming days and weeks unfortunately.

They have just asked for international aid now, but still won't let journalists in.

Watch out there, you have to fit in with the crowd! 10,000 people we dont know have died!

I am still waiting on the magic numbers:

5min Silence: < 10,000 people ?
10min Silence: ?????

For the record its very sad when anyone dies, I just hate the whole thing about fake sympathy.

Well frankly I find it hard to feel anything for the people that died or the people affected. It's just a statistic to me, I didn't know these people. Many more people die every day and nobody gives a damn, they just go about their daily lives. There's children starving, people suffering, all manner of living things dying in horrific circumstances, nobody gives a damn, why should these people get special treatment.
Ignorance is bliss. If you concerned yourself with every tragedy and death of each day you'd be severely depressed for the rest of your life.

I can kinda see his point. Why do we grief for these more just because they are on the news? Or is it the numbers that died? Why don't we have a thread everyday for people dying in africa, or the ones living in the slumps in brazil, or all those in war torn countries. Not saying they are not tragic, just isn't fair on the other people round the world.

A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic.

Other people around the world aren't killed by a natural disaster.

Other people around the world aren't killed by a natural disaster.

That makes their deaths less tragic?

Still born babies, people hit by cars, people murdered, starved, poisoned, frozen etc

All less worth of your sympathy than these?

Or is it just you never hear about them, so just choose to ignore it, like most people will do with this. To feel sympathy and sadness for every one would crush you, and leave you an emotional wreak, you need to be able to block out these things and focus on those close to you.

Doesn't make it less tragic, i doubt anyone like to be born with aids or have your parents executed in front of you. It almost feel like people put up the sad smilie like its fashionable to do so, do they really grief behind the online alias or even care? I probably sound like a heartless **** but i do wonder do people really deeply care or even moved by tragedy like this.

I'm kinda with Raymond on this. Yes, it's tragic, but I'd be lying if I said I genuinely felt much about it.

Maybe I'm just so used to hearing about people dying all the time...
