Varying Speaker Wire

Ok, I currently have 2 Wharfedale Diamond 9.4 Floorstanding speakers connected to my Yamaha RX-359 using some fairly thick cable. I have just bought the Diamond 9.CM Centre speaker however and need to connect this to my Yamaha Receiver. The problem is that the Receiver only has 'large' connectors for the Front L+R speakers and so the same cable would not fit in the centre connector.

My question is, is it ok to use a different, thinner cable for the centre speaker than the L+R?

What cable would you recommend for it? Cheapish (£2 per metre at the most).

Thanks in advance ;)

Thinner cable should be fine, but if you tell us what impedance your speaker is and how much power you intend to feed it then that would help. ;)

I use stranded copper mains cable myself, 2.5mm CSA, and rated for 20amps. Sounds just as good as cable costing 10 times as much.

I'll read it now. :) A lot of the other articles (and projects) he has done are very good, but there's so many of them that I must have missed that one.

generally people say spend 10% of what your gear costs on cables - thats interconnects, subwoofer cables, speaker cables etc. So work it out from that, work out how much you need and buy accordingly.

Personally I wouldn't buy into the whole cables thing though, as long as it isn't bell wire or something it should do the job well.

Ok, the centre speaker is 150w at 6ohms.

On the floorstanding ones I use Gale XL315 which seems reasonable to me.

The reason I can't use that (or thought I couldnt) for the centre however is because the centre connects to the back of the amp using a spring loaded type connector.

I found (with a little help) something called 2mm banana plugs (as opposed to the standard 4mm ones). They are alternatively called speaker pins.

These enable me to use thicker cable so everyone is happy :p

It's 99.99% pure oxygen free snake oil!

Get some Neutrik connectors, a spindle of 12/14/16 AWK and you are set. 16 AWG is fine for most setups. 12 and 14 are thicker and only really benificial when using longer runs of cable.

+1

Cables make such a small difference, you're better off saving your money instead of buying expensive cables, and put it towards better speakers. :) Also, you can't go wrong with Neutrik - even their budget connectors are good quality.
