I've recently acquired some spare(ish) cash and because i brought my PC on a budget, i thought "why not upgrade" :)

But i'm not too sure what to buy, so i was wondering if you guys could "spec me" some new upgrades :)

Current System

Cpu-AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+ 2.50GHz
Mobo-Asus M2N-E Sli Deluxe
Grafix-Asus 8500GT 512mb Silent Magic Edition
Memory-Kingston DDR2 PC2-5300
PSU-A cheap 400W that came with my Cheapy case(Hasnt got any case fans :D:D)
Cooling-One heatsink on my CPU....No joke
Soundcard-None
Harddrive- Samsung Spinpoint F1 500GB

Any advice would be MUCH appreciated

Regards

Maybe start by getting a decent psu and cpu cooler (and case if you want).

What kind of things do you do on your computer? And how much ram do you have?

How about a phenom x4 + 8800gt + 4gb ram?

With 250 theres no point going for intel I don't think

Gaming..Gaming..Gaming

2Gb sorry for not stating :)

Do i need a decent CPU cooler if i'm not overclocking, and wouldn't it be more sensible to get a case with built in fans and a psu ?

"How about a phenom x4 + 8800gt + 4gb ram?"

What ram do you recommend, i like the OCZ http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-111-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=
Is it any good?

I would start from the ground up, the case and psu of yours sound cheap and nasty, the psu is the most vital part of your system don't skimp on it. Some people may think that the psu i have speced might be a little ott but don't forget it has a 5yr guarantee. The case comes with two fans and for its price is reasonable quality.

I would purchase the above sell your current ram and graphics card and save up a few more ££ and go down the intel route.

Yeah, that sounds nice bud :)
Thanks a lot

Most important is a new PSU and Graphics card I'd say, you'll see the biggest boost with a GPU upgrade but you wouldn't want to run it on a nameless 400w...

What Gary has suggested is pretty nice, I wouldn't say you'd need to quickly hurry down the intel route though.

Need to address this first. As it is, the system might not be overheating but will be running at higher temps which causes instability & shortens components life especially the hard disk, etc.

How about...
  • Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK) £59.99
  • OcUK GeForce 9600 GT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £89.99
  • Lian-Li PC-7B PLUS II Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black £49.99
  • Sub Total : £199.97
  • Shipping : £9.95
  • VAT : £36.74
  • Total : £246.66

Hmm, the sound of a new case and PSU is nice. But if i'm going to fork out on a case, i want to be able to see inside it, with a few flashy lights, to remind me i'm human.

But the
"OcUK GeForce 9600 GT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)"
Hp7907 mentioned is looking likely :D

Get good PSU and good case, i wouldnt upgrade anything else for now. Get some more cash and do it later, you rig as it stands now should be able to handle everything pretty well yet.

I disagree, considering the usage of his PC for is "Gaming..Gaming..Gaming" I would be looking to replace that 8500GT ASAP. For £250 you could get a 8800GTX Extreme (£162) and a new PSU, although obviously you would need to check that the card will fit in the case OK.

Could always op for a

PowerColor ATI Radeon HD 3870 XT Extreme 512MB GDDR4 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI

Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case

Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU

Comes a tiny bit over your budget @ 264quid, but i dought you'll ever need to change the psu or case for a long time, and there would be so little differance in fps over the 8800gt with your cpu that the 3870 would be just as fast, this ones a bit faster then stock aswell with 800mhz and 2340mhz over 777/2250

thats what id do anyway :p

Foxor

Noticed its 300 now, add some of that ocuk pc6400 ram for 28 quid, 292pounds it comes to,
