Some key points ...

She highlighted "uncertainty at the least" on the future impact on young people's mental health from cannabis.

...

Council chairman Sir Michael Rawlings told BBC Radio 4's World at One: "The strength of things like skunk hasn't really changed very much over the last few years but it's now more widely used... The question of potency is a very complex area."

...

Labour MP Chris Mullin, who was chairman of the Commons home affairs select committee when it recommended that cannabis was downgraded to class C, said: "The government should follow the advice of the experts rather than that of the tabloids."

...

However, Martin Barnes, chief executive of DrugScope, said: "There is no evidence that reclassifying cannabis to Class B will reduce levels of use, levels of harm or the availability of the drug."

*edit, can a mod fix the spelling mistake please in the title?

fair point:

lol, me an mi maytz wil still smoke d@ @ da wknd coz we iz propa 'ard innit.

The sooner government stops shunning scientific information on drugs instead of using its own pre-conceptions we might actually get somewhere.

The grading will make no difference, what so ever. There was no discernable difference in supplies for either classification. If anything, they rose with more being supplied from within our own border than ever before. Class A convictions don't stop those people, the rest of the alphabet is unlikely to instil much more fear of the legal repercussions.

Will you be affected by its reclassification? Do you thing the pigs will chase you that bit faster because you were inhaling a class-B over a class-C? Do you not also think that you will get the same sentence no matter for dealing because of the increased population in prisons?

Bad local results + tabliods don't like weed + election = crap move

Hope this bites them in the arse.

Legalising weed, prostitution and saying "Actually, Speed doesn’t kill" is political suicide.

to be honest, the 5 year sentence worries me more than the 2 year sentence, but any sentence worries me. I think with a class C you're more likely to get a slap on the wrist and told to hand it over (wink) and be on your way (based on experience of my friends, I've thankfully never been caught - possibly largely due to not sitting in Halfords car park smoking!).

I think this is a stupid move by the government. It will again cause much confusion about what can happen if you are caught with it.

At class C it was a happy medium of "ok, if you're going to do it, do it, but not outside your home or we'll take it off you".

What does it mean now? Prison sentences for posession (especially with all those free prison cells we have lying around!)?

What frightens you will certainly not frighten them (term wise). Once you can handle the lost freedom, jail ain't that bad at all.

Most have been already.

Its as siimple as;

Gordon Brown: "We arent getting millions in taxes from people doing this recreational activity.. RECLASSIFY IT"

The Police/government coming out and saying "It's ok in your own space" would be legalising drugs and ultimately a move that wouldn't sit well with the middle class, but it goes on - the police aren’t going to waste resources on people smoking it only if they come across it so the usual thing of keeping a low profile. And no judge will send you away unless you do deal the drug. Judges under increasing pressure to free up jail space, this won't sit well with the prison issue again especially since there hasn't been and "influx" and other people aren’t being affected.

Kids in Halfords car park smoking it...aren’t causing an issue, when you get high you "relax" and "chill" and let the world float by. It's other substances and alcohol that cause real issue. Of course they cannot legalise a substance that can cause harm. Unlike alcohol and pain killers...
I'm not advocating smoking it in public places, but there is no need to be hard on people using it outside. Take it off them and move thme on.

I'm quite attached to my freedom, though. I've had it quite a while now. Have you been?
You implied that Mr. Brown wasn't getting taxes from it so it should be reclassified? But he does through increased tobacco, rolling papers and chocolate sales...

Doritos, takeaway pizza, business cards

:D True.

But he could get more if it was legal and he taxed it. Its not the only reason he wants to reclassify it though, naturally.

What's the point of employing experts if you're going to ignore their advice? That's a great use of tax-payers' money.

You are missing my point I think.

You sit here going oww yes wow those are bad I don't like the sound of that. But you are a nice good living little OcUKer. So I would expect that.

Someone who has been in and out of institutes most of their adult life, drawn into that walk of life are not scared of the jail terms after release.

Certainly they do not want to walk back in of their own accord, but accept that with the business/criminality there is always the chance of punishment.

Mixed in with the fact that most people get out early, its generally viewed as easy and thats if you even get caught in the first place.

I can quite easily see how people do not fear the jail.

I've never been given a custodial sentence. I 've helped gain a couple though! ;)
