You have to pay the same tax levels as everyone else, its just you shouldn't pay any (below tax thresholds) as you should be at college/uni/sch full time..

P38 form is all you need. Students do not have to pay tax BUT there are certain rules such as needing to fill out a P38 - it explains it all on the form.

**EDIT Here's the link for you as well :) P38 Form

if your due a reclaim, it will show this on your P60.

if it does photocopy and send to tax offuce with letter ddemanding payment asap.

you will get your cash quicker that way.

hmmm so on my payslips a few weeks back it said i was had paid £XXX amount tax, and now the amount is much less on my more recent pay slips. so is it possible for me to reclaim that £XXX amount? if so which form is it i fill?

thanks for the help

wait till you get your p60, do the calculation your self,
then claim the necessary. 99.99% of the time the calculation is correct.

unless you ahve been paying emergency tax or something you probally wont be due a rebate.

As is normal for tax threads on Ocuk, there is loads of incorrect information here.

First, students do pay tax just like everyone else, you get the personal allowance, which is the tax free amount you can earn. You then pay tax on everything over that amount.

The P38(s) (note the s after it, the P38 is a completely different form) is for students who plan to only work during their holidays and expect their earnings for the whole tax year to be less than the personal allowance, and must be completed beforehand.

The P60 will not state if you are due a refund or not. It will only show yout pay and tax for the year from that employment (and previous employments if you gave that employer a P45 from a previous employer in the same year).

azamc - You will probably be wanting to claim for two tax years. The one ended 5 April 2008, and the one that started on 6 April 2008. For last year, you will need your P60, and any other P45s you received during the tax year, and send them with a covering letter to your tax office asking them to check the amount of tax you paid. Make sure you detail what you did for the whole year, detailing periods when you were not working and wether you were claiming benefits in those periods or not.

For the current year (the one that started on 6 April, you will need to wait until you leave and get your P45. Then fill in a P50, completing the appropriate declarations and send that to your tax office with the P45 to get any appropriate refund.

I would also advise against following mangobreeder's advice of 'demanding your cash asap' as rudeness will only serve to annoy the HMRC employees who are dealing with your repayment claim, and they may feel compelled to make you jump through hoops to get your refund. Politeness is always the best approach.

i didnt actually do that badly, got ABBC, just that im holding out for a bigger university.

as for these forms, am i ment to recieve them in the post? dont think iv gotten them. is there anywhere else i can get them from?

thanks

You get a P45 from your employer when you stop working for them.

You get a P60 from any employer who still employs you on 5 April each year. They have until the end of May to give it to you.

You get forms P38(S) and P50 from HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs) which can be found on their website www.hmrc.gov.uk

Chippie you are incorrect

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/p60.pdf

Shows a proforma p60 with the mandatory fields. The refund due is under the "pay and Income Tax Details", and the vast majority of employers will include this field. Its been several years since i have had to design a p60 for a company, but last time I check the Mark R for refund field was a mandatory field

As for demanding payment, this is perfectly valid, as HMRC has to follow set procedures Similar to the FSA, they are accountable to the parliamentary ombudsman. It is perfectly ok to request payment ahead of schedule, it ensures that your refund is processed sooner than later/

Plus you only need to complete a P50 if you are entirely sure you will not be working again in this tax year. If you are going to carry on working or intend to work again in this tax year then a P50 is unnecessary.

Sorry i know sweet F all about tax, but companies are allowed to design their own forms?

I would have thought the gov just gave out the format?

If only for ease of examining. Can you indulge my curiosity?*
