Stop me if you've already come across this...

I know some people here share my fury at the sheer volume of weapons in Mario Kart Wii. This may help a bit...

I managed to dodge a blue shell just now in MK on the Wii. I was on Bowser Castle, and it was just after the upward spiral with the thwomps, coming out of the last bend towards the last jump before the home straight. As the blue shell came over me, I boosted with a mushroom, and was shocked to escape the blast of the blue shell.

Perhaps this can be replicated in some way? I'm not sure it can be done with drifting, but maybe it's worth a try next time you've got some mushrooms.

Check the tube, videos of people doing the same thing so it looks like people are starting to learn of it. I believe it was also in the DS version.

Basically, what happens is that the blue shell stops tracking you once it's found you and has started the lift off so it crashes down on you. It slows down at this point. If you have a gold mushroom power up or such, you can boost out of it.

Ah, so it is known. I'd not heard of it yet, but I didn't think I could have been the first to have found it.

At least now I know it wasn't just some freaky bug!

Yeah it's a feature of all mario karts with blue shells in them, just in the DS version the MT was fast enough to do it without items.

Yep, it's one of the many small facets of the game that separates the good players from the great players.

Hmm. Looking at Youtube it appears it's possible to drift to avoid the blue shell. That must make you near invincible, if you can get to the front.

Would have made my quest to get stars on all the cups a lot easier...

Star rankings account for lightening, pow blocks and blue shells so they have no influence on your time.

I wondered if they might. Nevertheless, it would have been one less thing slowing me down while trying to do Rainbow Road on mirror mode. Ugh.

Its impossible to drift away from a blue shell, Ive tried so many times, mini-turbo doesn't work either! And how often does anyone have a mushroom when they're at the front? Ive normally got 3 bananas hanging off my ass and another in the box! Unless theres some other way then I'm still totally against blue shells (unless I'm second).

It can be dodged with a drift and turbo. Check youtube. And yes - I concede it is rare to have a mushroom when in first place.

All the videos are the DS version or the author stating you need a mushroom and a wheelie, I can't see any claiming to do it without items.
