| International Engine of the Year 2008 |

For the second year in a row, BMW's 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol engine has been voted International Engine of the Year. The top honour added to BMW's haul of six category wins in the prestigious awards.

Peter Langen, BMW's powertrain director, said: "BMW rightly views these awards as the highest industry recognition. It is an honour for our 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine to have secured the highest possible accolade for the second year running and we are truly delighted that so many of our engines have been judged as class-leading."

Other winners for BMW included Best New Diesel of 2008 for the 123d's twin-turbo 2.0-litre and Best Engine above 4.0-litres for the M5's 507bhp V10 motor.

BMW always seem to do well in these awards. The M54 and M52 range of engines won an award from the same selection throughout every year of production.

This is because they are awesome engines.

the 135i is an awesome car, the engine is sublime
as are all of their 6 pots tho to be fair..

bet the 123d isn't too shabby either..

why would they filter through to competitors?
none of BMW's rivals currently use straight 6 engines afaik

edit- apart from Ford in australia and Volvo's straight six in the S80 :p
and mercedes diesels.. but they suck :o

Dont BMW do a 1 Series with quite frankly scary performance but due to Efficient Dynamics some stupid CO2 like 110g/km...? Would be far more worthy of the Green award than the imaged hyped, not actually that economical, overpriced and not very green Prius?

Can't you do say, twin turbo merc diesels?

Or do they already have them?

Never realised the 1.6 Turbo from the Mini was also used in PSA cars!

Anywho, can't argue with the results!

BMW are so far ahead of the mass market manufacturers in engine design I am not suprised by the results. Exceptional range of engines that seem to get better and better each year.

isnt the new 3.0 engine 'better' than the 3.5 (3.0 turbo) insofar as it is a brand new engine and generates 272 n/a bhp versus the 300 or so from an older turbo'd unit?

wonder when they will start turbo charging the new un?

I agree as well, BMW engines are superb.. I love the 123D engine, it's just amazing performance and fuel consumption..

The only negative thing is the servicing is expensive, but at least service intervals are reasonable..

Looking at the economy and performance of the 135 and the 335i/d i'm kinda thinking i should have ordered one.

Having said that.. i'm not a fan of the looks of either of them. plus my mum drives one!

Is it something like the 118d you're referring to with 119g/km? I think it was that, falls just into the £35 tax bracket and delivers 140bhp and 300Nm

In perspecting my 2.0 Petrol 128bhp and 195Nm engine falls in the £210 bracket :( :( :(

Pretty damn amazing when you look at it that way!

Not surprising when they have such good perfomance figures as well as low co2 and consumption, if only my 3l v6 was as economical as the new efficient dynamics engines :(
