Looking to replace my *ahem*Vectra with something cheap. Only I don't want a tin can. The plan is if it gets a bill for too much ill just get the money back on the tax and buy another car. Most appear to come with a full history, im guessing due to the nature of the people who buy them. And are very well kitted cars for the money. What do you guys think?

Example:

if you get 6 months out of it your laughing, but its got a fairly chunky engine and i imagine the insurance isnt gonna be as cheap as it could be, i would spend a bit more money and get something better personally.

and mondeos are a better bet, but you are 21, not 31 ;)

If you can afford the fuel (e.g not doing much mileage) then go for it. Cars like these don't hit insurance that hard but they are heavy and use more fuel.

Luxobarge bangernomics is good :D

A £500 volvo is better than a £500 mondeo, the mondeo doesn't have any of the basic luxuries needed!

we have a 2.5 auto GLT.

its on around 100k now and never let us down. everything still works as it should.

bullet proof and comfy. :)

As above, you will have to try pretty hard to break a Volvo.

My old mans has 135k on the clock, its been to italy and back - including overheating twice. It now runs with blown piston rings , eats oil but for some reason it is still going.

Hehe, some good replies in here. The insurance is less than im paying for my 2.0 Vectra this year, it's going to be a replacement in July when I renew. And yes I am only 21 years old not 51 but I think they are kinda cool lol, in a completely un-cool way. Yes fuel will be more expensive but I only get 22mpg out of my Vectra anyway.

Depends entirely how it's been ran and maintained.

Exactly but a good proportion of the market for both of these cars are in completely different sections.

Volvo > Mondeo :D

Are there any more recommendations or advice on the volvo? I've even considred going as old as a 940 or 740 but they look REALLY old skool lol.

thing is though its not that simple. Which is the better car comes down entirely to which of the 2 you can find the best example of. There arent thousands of examples of <£500 cars that are minters with full service historys etc.. There are some, but you may only be able to find a minter example of a mondeo for example.

Which will be better than most of the tatty horrible volvos that go for £500

like penski says, it all depends upon what you can find.

There is a video of a volvo being fed stones and grass through the oil filler cap on the engine, they continued to drive it for rather a long time. This to me shows that even if a volvo doesnt have fsh, a little bit of old oil isnt actually going to do much damage at all really:p Plus they look cool and you have a 2.5 turbo engine to do some modding on.....

Yeah i'd go for a volvo 740 saloon. Pick those up all day long for sub £600. RWD as well ;)
Check out www.turbobricks.com , site for the volvos:)
I'd like a 740 turbo saloon but they seem pretty hard to get hold of, but if your interested in speed these would be worth a look. Obviously when i say speed its relative.
