I am royally angry now. Got a second Panasonic 37PX80 delivered today. Surprise surprise its the same fault again!

I turn the Tv on for the first time, it auto tunes, finds all the TV channels with a signal strength of 10.

I then put it on standby, turn it off at the mains, turn it on again then wham! Totally lost signal - no radio stations, no freeview, no analogue. Nothing no channels at all!

It now, like the previous set wont tune anything, it finds zip.

This is the second bloody TV set thats done this. Is it something I am doing?

What other manufacters make nice TV sets, I have totaly lost faith with Panasonic despite there rave reviews :/

Not happy. Oxy

I think this may well be your problem, though I know of no TV set that relies on being plugged into the mains in order to keep its settings.

If Panasonic's name is now mud in your house, I suggest Toshiba or JVC.

How can turning a TV at the mains render it useless?

Thanks for posting :)

You're either EXTREMELY unlucky or doing something strangely wrong.
Sorry to hear of the problem though.

Can you rule out them taking it back, testing it briefly, and sending the same set back to you?

Heres my thread on avforums:

Seems this dude has isolated the problem to the HDMi ports, seems that if you leave a hdmi device on when turning the tv off at the mains (in my case the PC) all the tv tuners die. Unplug the pc via HDMi it comes back on!

Seems a lot of the PX80's have this problem.

Should I return the TV? or wait for a software update?

If it was me I'd not return it, now you know how to avoid it happening. Depends how much it annoys you.
Still an odd thing though

Well I never turn it off at the mains, so its not gonna effect me. I'll wait for a software update, not arsed if they never fix it as it wont effect me.

The PQ is so immense that theres nothing at my £600-700 budget that is even close the the 37PX80

If I was you, I would complain, tell panasonic you think your TV is unfit for its purpose, and demand they replace it with a model which works correctly.

If your really lucky you might even get a PZ true HD model, assuming it doesnt have the same problem :), or perhaps they would bump you up to the 42PX80 assuming that model doesnt have the same issue.

At least you found a work around, from the sound of it the only time it might happen is during a powercut, and then the connected device would power off to, so perhaps not even then. It fixes itself when you disconnect the HDMI, or do you have to retune at that point.

Sounds a bit annoying, but I wouldnt abandon panasonic over it.. I would moan/whine/complain until they replaced the TV with a better model without the problem.

He didn't buy it from Panasonic so it's got nothing to do with them. He's entitled to a full refund from the place which sold him it, anything above that is good will.

I may log it with John Lewis. TBH I dont want another TV, the PX80 is so good. I dont want a 42" as its too large for my room.

I dunno may phone the shop today.

Ooo annoying glitch there.

I can imagine you are pulling your hair out trying to decide between the PQ and plus points of the set (which I see you love to bits), and this really annoying glitch.

Have you tried different HDMI ports, maybe e-mail panasonic, or call them and try to speak to a a tech to see if there is a wokaround.

Or just leave it on standby all the time until there is a fix. Check out the specs to see how much power it draws in standby, but from other tvs (and mine) it should be about 1 Watt which is nothing at all.

Good luck.

I always left my old set on standby and will do the same on this one. I only turned it off at the mains to test it all, which is how the problem occurs. IT wont effect me from now on as I never turn it off at the mains, but would like it fixed soon none-the-less.

Ahhh kk, so your not totaly adverse to standby, but agreed it is an annoyng problem that needs to be sorted out by panasonic.

Makes you think if they really test their tvs with a variety of sources like satellite boxs, consoles, HTPCs etc.

Just some news, my sorth lived love affair with panasonic is over, keeps buggering up. Its getting refunded yet again. I am mightly impressed with ********* no arguements nothing, top class people!

Are there any other non-panasonic plasma's around £600-900 worth looking at?

If not I think im hoping on either the Toshiba 42Z3030 or the Samsung LE-40A656 train!

Oooo LCD, that is all I have to say about them ;)

Saw in the other thread you're thinking of the new LG. Might be good, might be crap, but the store you will probably be going with are awesome at returns as you have found out.

Edit out the store name, competitor :)

Im gonna try this LG out, according to hdtvorg and trusted reviews its on par with the px80, slightly a few % lower, but hey. The panny refuses to work for me so its a mute point

on avforums the LG is getting a good response, no problems so far.

Plus the LG comes with a free glass stand and is the same price as the px80 range. Im also going upto 42" yay

What other plasma brands do you suggest?

It does seem to be getting some good press and user reviews so definately worth a go, you could have yourself a real gem there. If the panny is that annoying then replacing it is a good idea as it will constantly bug you, and something costing this much should not have a fault like this.

42inches is always better than 37, ask the mrs :D

I can't honestly think of any other brands off the top of my head, lol. There are samsung, philips, LG of course and..... erm..... that's it from me this morning, I need a fry up after last night before being able to think properly :p

Get pics up as ever with some Hovis.

The LG PG6000 isnt sold by the shop ffs.

There is the samxung PS42A457 - but its not even on the smasung uk site and theres no threads on avforums about it.

I dont wanna spend £300 more on an equivilent LCD.

Time to give up prehaps?

getting frustrated :/
