Team OcUK SETI@home News Vol. 17

Bin using optimised apps for a while but the new Alex V8 Port for windows is amazing! If your CPU has SSE3, SSSE3 or SSE4.1 then get over to this site http://www.haveland.com/seti/ and get your crunching done a lot quicker!

Cut about an hour off a AMD X2 machine I have. My Q6600 used to do WU in about 1hr 20mins and now it does them in 50 mins!!

I read about the port ages ago on the S@H forums but didn't think it was going to make this much difference.

Just to let everone know there are SSE2 and below apps but the new V8 App is only for SSE3 and above. IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY GOT THE APP GET IT NOW!! :D

EDIT: Sorry Kev, wasn't ignoring you :D Shame to hear that, will give you a wave as I pass by and hope to see you again in the future ;)

I didnt think you would miss the chance to rub it in as you zoomed past *joke* ill make sure i'm out on saturday when it happens

Aww, going to be sulking are you? ;)

Thanks for that Dougiebabe2003, will give it a go in the morning. Can't remember if you lose WUs that have already been downloaded though when you use a new app, and I've got a fair few stashed. Hopefully the new app will just carry on from where the old one left off.

Will continue working on all WU's you already have. I find the trick is to:

Exit Boinc (or stop the service) so that the S@H app is not running at all,

Copy all the files that are in the folder 'Files to Install' into the S@H projects folder (Normally C:\Program Files\Boinc\Projects\S@H)

Restart Boinc

If you then go into the messages tab it should say 'Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform'
If you also go into task manager it will say 'AK_V8_Win_x64(or86)_SSSE3x(or whatever you install).exe

Been kind to you Tross because your so kind to us giving us the news each week;), your P4 running X86 will take the SSE3 app which can be found here

Hope to see your RAC shoot up ;) :D

Ah, thanks for that. Just done it now. WUs used to take anywhere from 4hrs to nearly 5hrs, so hopefully will see a bit of a decrease :D

I have to say that this new optimised app is brilliant! Seems to be taking at least one hour off my WU times so far. This is definitely the way forward for anyone running SSE3-/SSE4-enabled CPUs!

Ah think ive got it :)

cpartcert1.php

CGS :D

Its great :p Ive seen my average go back up above 3500 for the first time in ages on my windows boxes.
Im looking for one for SSE2 Xeons as I have an 8 cpu server on linux, Im using crunch3rs 2.4 optimised client for linux,
but I haven't seen an improvement over the standard debian 5.27 boinc client - does anyone know of any better linux clients?

Huge congrats to CGS - that is a serious amount of crunching - I should be there in a couple of years or so... :D

Diogenese - You cary on going for that million as I am slowly closing the gap on you..

Answer own post time
I could be writing up my study diaries for Uni, or I could be browsing the web for seti optimisations :p
Anyway good news for those with slightly older computers.
It would seem that there is a concerted effort to port the v8 optimised client that we are all raving about to support linux and SSE2 CPU's with a 30-40% increase in crunching speeds.
They are still testing but results are looking good. With my 8 core Xeon box, I will be keeping a close eye on this and will post as soon as I see something ready

Back to the studying now

[edit] - just noticed - my post count is the same?????

Like the look of this :D

I still have a few PC's running that will take advantage of the SSE2 optimized apps, as I'm sure a lot of people around here will also benefit greatly from it!

Edit: Just seen that it has happened, I have passed Kev and am now sitting 1K in front :p This should stay unless he's storing up the WU's...

I didn't think it was going to happen today as my quad went down to allow me to change my RAM out, tighten the timimgs and re-plug in a 80mm fan that keeps RAM + Mobo cool-er....

No one in my way now for a long while :D Indigo_Prime looks the most scary at 4.5K a day

Dave Curr
Dr Grey
Naran K Patel
_xPk_
Ed Winward

These are my next stomps which should all be happening within the next two weeks :D

its more than 1k that you are infront now, and i dont have anything stored up, so i shall have to wave you on your way :)

Patience is a virtue, dear crunchers :p

It'll be along shortly :)

Edit: No it won't, because BOINCStats isn't loading at the minute. May take a little while longer then :(
