Cookers - Gas or Electric?

Induction may have been crap when you were working in the industry dm but it's the dog's danglies now; I can state categorically that it is better, more controllable, much more more efficient etc than gas or normal electric.

I can turn down a hotplate on my hob as milk is boiling and it drops down the pan in the same way as gas; I've had my cooker for 18 months now and wouldn't have anything else.

Ya pays your money and takes yaour chance but I know where my hard earned cash would go.

I'm in a flat, so don't have gas. I remember my gas hobs in the last place being awesome, especially if you use woks often. nowdays, our oven and hob is electric, but it's not so bad. The oven is unbelievably efficient, and the induction hob really isn't too bad, It heats up in no time at all, but as said before, If you use a Wok a fair bit, you *need* gas hobs!

Some of the newer electric instant hot/cold cookers are ok, but I prefer gas - getting a decent fry-up is a pain to juggle with our crappy old electric hob. It takes an age to heat up, then when it finally does start to get warm you end up with a mini Chernobyl runaway meltdown which speedily burns anything you might have wanted to cook on it.

have used a few electric hobs and all of them without exception was totally crap. Sorry dmpoole I think you are deluded, gas is millions of times better.

I got my oven for nowt in a deal with my Sammy jeep :p
It ws 8 months old & stainless steel so looks pretty trick for an appliance of mine. It's Leccy as i only have leccy in my house & don't even have a gas meter.
Perfect set up for cooking though is gas rings & a Leccy oven, You cannot beat Leccy baking & you cannot beat the control you get with gas rings.

well, while i think gas is certainly better for some things, i think you're going to have to do a lot better than call somebody who tested this things for a living "deluded"

You can do that with every electric hob on all those models in my Cooker Porn.
the induction models when working are excellent but the failure rate is very high and thats why we stopped.

Once again, my results were sent all around the world and the results say different.
I did this 8 hours a day for 27 years and over the last 15 years the electrics became quicker and very controllable.
The very first test on the C60GTX results I linked to confirm its controllability (even though that is a gas cooker) but all electrics & gas passed that test.
I spent years turning boiling pans down and at one time we used to cook meat and make toast but it got too expensive because we couldn't find any difference between gas & electric.

I have electric oven which does the job, but proper double with fan would be better. My hobs are electric and they are unresponsive. Gas is much better in my experience, instant control.

You might of used top end equipment out of most peoples price range.
Test are also not the same as cooking. It might boil water, but it takes age to get any heat. But once the heat is there, due to the contact area you get great transfer.

Gas is also more controllable (ignoring induction as I have never used it) Hot paltes take ages to cool down. Halogen although better still takes a while to cool down, you still have a lump of glass that heats up. Gas you turn the knob and that it the heat disperses.

Gas hobs are always so much easier to clean as well. Electric hobs store heat. this means spillages burn onto the top. Gas you have comparatively little heat transfer to the surrounding. So is easier to clean. Even though it's not totally flat like electric.

You then have control ability, unless you spend 300+ just for a hob, you get about 6 settings with electric.

that's unbelievable. The government needs a kick up the rear

even my parents got gas over 10 years ago when there village was small.

where they top of the range because normal electric cookers, heat up slower and only have 5/6 power levels.

That's strange. Our one I think is halogen, and is pretty old, yet still has 12 stages of power.

It works well enough, however I'd prefer a gas hob.

ceramic hobs are a piece of cake to clean :/

my belling e662 has 8 levels for each of the 4 ceramics. £369 delivered.

My grandparents have one a couple of years old that only has 5.
Still 12 settings isn't a lot, where your looking for perfect temperatures whilst cooking.

Id go with electric as I find Gas deceptively expensive these days. In all the houses Ive lived in I pay more for gas than electricity and I have only had gas central heating! Hate to think what it would be like with a gas cooker as well. Prob agree with posts about electric hobs but I do like the fact you can turn them off and still cook for a few mins.

We recently got a new cooker new hot point one with a fan assisted electric oven (my god i swear it is the best thing I've ever used!) The hobs are also electric but under a glass cover & they seem to cook food very nicely too. Quick i may add.

My dad doesn't trust gas so we're all electric here :)

Where I live the owner during the first world war ripped out all the gas piping due to worries about Zeppelins dropping bombs so have had only electric since.

Goverment then converted the house into a burns hospital.

Induction really is a great compromise.

It's as clean and clutter-free looking as electric, can be used where gas isn't an option, almost as controllable as gas, with arguably more even and direct heat (gas heats the cookware which in turn heats the food, with induction, a magnetic field causes the cookware itself to be the source of the heat which spreads perfectly evenly over the base of the pan).

It's also much safer.... turn the hob on.... and nothing happens unless a suitable pan is placed on it, which means any kids playing with it will just be met with a perfectly cold surface. It also cools amazingly quickly after use.
