hi all

went down Brighton marina the other night for a walk. took some pictures along the way.

i use a nikon d70 with the kit 18-70 lens.

i used a try pod with all the shots. the movment of the boats in the water makes them look blurred? im gussing theres no way of stopping this as must shots were taken with 20-30 second exposure?

i used ps cs3 to adjust the colour and exposure slighty and added a boarder.

im not sure if its the processing in ps for if its the camera but they all seem really grainy. all the shots were taken at ISO 200?

this shot was taken over shoreham airport, for people that dont know its a bridge that goes between two hills. it was quite possibly the windesty day and even with the try pod there was a lot of camera shake. im going to go back there on a less windy night.

C+C always welcome.

Long exposures create noise in the same way that increasing the ISO does, since over the time of the exposure the sensor heats up. You can counter it somewhat by enabling long exposure noise reduction in the menu, but that will double your exposure time so might not be worth it for you compared to just correcting it in post.

Here's a test on the D70: http://www.nies.ch/doc/nikon-d70/noise/index.en.php

intresting link cheers for that.

on a side note does one know how to save signatures in ps so i dont have to write it out every time?

They shouldn't appear that grainy at ISO 200 (although I guess they may be a bit more noisy as you're using a D70?). But yeah as Rob says it'll probably be due to the long exposure.

To stop the blur of the boats there are really only two options, increase the ISO, but that will make the shots very noisy, or go earlier. Earlier is probably the best bet, so there is just a little more light around that should help decrease the exposure time.

Nice pics,

To answer your question, I have my sigs loaded in a seperate layer, so when each image is done I just drag the sig from its own layer into the actual picture i'm working on, providing both colour types are the same.

How do i save the sig to a layer? sorry total ps nub.

Nice set of pictures,

hi, i used a manfrotto modo tripod for these shots. its only a cheap pod but i like it as it light to carry around and has lots of adjustment. the legs can be spread so the camera is basicaly sitting on the ground, you can also mount the camera under the tripod to get even clower to the ground.
its farily stable at lower heights, but if fully extended its a bit unstable and you get to much movement. its got a ball and socket tilting head which is its biggest let down, you can't use large lenses as the locking mechanism isn't strong enought to hold it in place.
saying that its fine with my d70 and kit lens.
its good for a cheap tripod but dont expect to much from it.

best plus point are

lots of adjustment
stable at lower heights
very light and easy to carry around.
