does anyone think this sound system setup is abit much? :D

all this Car amp/sub stuff... other than making the house shake with poor quality bass, i cant see the purpose.

money would be better spent on a nicer, sleeker, and better sounding setup

dont knock it untill you've tried it is all ill say. nobody ever said a bad word about my 12" lightning audio subwoofer in my own designed and built enclosure. and the 15" sealed JBL im using now integrates so well with the room that i get a response flat down to 8hz in the listening position, with all the group delay benefits of a sealed subwoofer. car amps in the home are a waste of time, but a subwoofer is a subwoofer. as long as the thiele-small's add up, it doesnt matter if its meant for a car or anything else.

Generally speaking, aren't car amps and speakers over rated and their power-ratings are taking the wee-wee most of the time.

Again just generally speaking.

Yes, it is a bit much. You don't need three subs.
Would be interesting to hear 'super sharp shooter' on it though.

tbh i can't see how u can comment on the sound quality. u are not here so it impossible for u to say.

Ok thats true. However judging by the layout of it, the excessiveness of if, i just cant imagine it sounds too great. Loud i imagine. but not sweet sounding.

although again, thats just speculation :)

so are low end home speakers, subwoofers and amplifiers. its about par for course really. if its a decent brand, then its a different story irrespective of its intended uses:)

i agree car amp isn't needed but i have 3subs so for me cars was the way to go.

you dont need 3 subs and amps lol. do you have an spl meter? you should invest in one. not only will it enable to set up your system correctly, but it'll also prove your loudness claims and enable us to see just how well your 3 subwoofers really drop. i managed 120db @ 30hz with 1x subwoofer and 1x 2x100w amplifer, 110db at 20hz. i'd love to see what your three subwoofers manage. get one!

Perhaps people judge it because you come across as an illinformed person just trying to say "wow look at my setup". Just trying to brag that you've got something amazing, when from what most people can tell it really wouldn't sound that great and you'd be better off with positioning everything more intelligently.

Not to mention that OcUK is renowned for it's hatred of text speak and childish manorisms which you seem to be doing in abundance!

Sure nobody can know for sure how it sounds. But in all honestly, it really shouldn't sound very good... It should just sound loud and probably full of bass.

as i said in the other post, the pictures didn't show the layout right. i guess because i used my webcam... its a lage squaw room

First part... good point, yeah if it's a good brand then yes it will match it's specs.

Second part... I'd like to see that too :)

i could summerise it pretty well i think. poor stereo imaging across the front, no upper treble, harsh treble around 11-15k, recessed midrange and virtually no output at around 120-200hz. very strong but muddy bass in the 40-80hz region and little output below 30hz.

prove im wrong, buy an spl meter;)

Can you do a top-down schematic of the layout for us then?

To give you some idea:

--[*]-----[*]-----[*]--

[*]----------------[*]

Is roughly my set up in a 5.0 configuration, the front pair are 2.8m apart, the rear pair are 4.2m apart and front to back distance is 3m.

My sofa is 3m from the front directly between the rear pair, with the rear's down a couple of dB due to proximity to where i'd be sitting.

3 subs can be an advantage in getting a good overall response, with them tuned for different bands and positioned to reduce room node effects, but I doubt that is what is happening here. How are you powering these 12V car amps anyhow? Set of batteries or an old computer power supply (or something else!). I used to set up things like this with random speakers here and there, good fun but not a likely route to ultimate quality.

James, 8hz is very impressive, especially for a sealed . Are you using electronic compensation or are you just getting very complimentary room gain? I plan for sealed woofers, probably with linkwitz transform; but can I expect a lot of room gain? Agree that car subs can be effectively used in the home, main thing to put you off is the naff logos on the cone of some of them :p

from what i caluclated, i was getting around 15db gain at 10hz, possible more. it comes from having almost the best possible layout in the living room that i could have asked for. the subwoofer is smack bang in the middle of the two front speakers, under the center speaker directly under the tv. with my sitting on the suffer against the opposite wall, i get a massive boundary gain and it all works rather nicely:D

there are two problems however. a massive peak at 50hz that i had to iron out, and the limited output that comes with the territory of using a sealed sub. i wont be getting 120db output from this one. but the linearity and quality are worth it alone.

no i'm not, im just pointing out thats it's impossible for someone to comment on the sound quality... only that

For sure, I agree that nobody can be 100% sure on the sound quality but if your experienced enough you'd get a decent idea!

I meant from your original post about the "wow look at my setup" part. Not you saying about people not being able to comment on sound quality.
