I am a little confused (as always)... would it be better to have two 8800GT's than a single 9800GX2? The 9800GX2 would appear from what I have read to have less that double the performance of an 8800GT and costs nearly 2.5 times as much, generates more heat than Sizewell etc...

Some would argue that with the newer cards from ATi and NV on the horizon waiting might be the best option.

But if you want GPU's now and have an SLi board then two GT's would be a fine choice.

However, i wanted an intel chipset so for performance graphics i needed the GX2.

As for temperature - it really shouldn't been an issue as long as you have decent airflow in your case.

2x8800GT will be a little slower but nothing major but much better value then a 9800GX2, 9800GX2 is really only the those without sli mobos, if you have a SLI mobo then 2x8800GT is definitely the way to go.

Just don't bother with SLI. Get a GT for now and then upgrade again if you desperately need to. The performance increase compared to your old 7800 is still going to be staggering.

yeah if you can't wait, then id just pick up a single 8800 GT for now, or even a 9600 GT, then you can upgrade again in July with the 9900's.

Thanks - I reckon a 8800GT for now will suffice

I bought an 8800GT and it's fantastic, although I will be buying a new one next month to go SLi, it's the cheapest way for awesome performance... in COD4, Crysis etc... then I won't upgrade for ages me thinks...

Cheers
