Hey guys,

After managing to warp/crack 2 sets of blank "oem replacement" disks in 10k miles with my larger brake set up, I'm gonna give a better set a try. Will go grooved this time to disipate the heat a little better, but dont fancy drilled as they're even more prone to cracking?

Are mintex grooved disks any good? Or Tarox / Black diamon, but a little bit pricey on them ones. They are Focus ST170 disks that I need, 300mm.

Thanks

Tom.

Get standard mintex. Will easily deal with fast road use. the ones on my gti-6 are awesome, better than OE. Dirt cheap too (£25 a set of front pads)

you say pads yet i'm asking for disks....ive managed to crack Apec and Bremtec blank disks so i'm not so sure OEM spec ones are gonna cut it, I didn't buy larger brakes to admire how much they fill the rims, they get used and used hard.

Will check the site out though, cheers :)

I have Brembo plain disks on the Golf, they have survived about 7k miles of abuse including 2 ring trips and I havent had any problems so far.

How long are your disks lasting before they start cracking? Any tell tale marks on them? Have you thought of adding some ducting to keep them cooler? Which pads are you using?

ATE bits are OEM on many French cars (along with Lucas and DBA, which can also be found on many french made vehicles with no apparent pattern as to what car gets what manufacturers bits fitted to it! But french manufacturing habits are another thread entirely...).

there is lots of warping and light cracking on the middle of the disks all the way around :\ They're lasting about the same length of time as a set of pads atm, which is about 6-7k miles

How would one go about making a brake air duct?

I think they are used a lot also throuh Vauxhall and so on...I think my Skoda RS might even have em.

Run some ducting from the lower front grill and direct it towards the disks if you have room.

I've got 2 air ducts that replace the fog lights on the golf but no pipework installed as I havent experienced any fade yet.

Which pads are you using? 7k miles for a set of disks and pads on the road is  Do both sides crack or just one?

7k is a rough figger, it's probably more but i dont really keep a record.

I use Mintex Xtremes (aka m1144) pads. When i say cracking, the cracks dont go right to the edge of the disks, only about half a cm hairline jobbies, maybe that's just warping?

Tom.

EDIT first post as not being a teenager :o And it's about my car eating parts..........typical ;(

Gutted now officially half way to 40 ;) Happy B'day :)

It sounds like the disk cant take the heat generated, do you ever get brake fade?

ATE Power disks are supposed to be good a lot of people on Club GTi run them.

Yesterday at the MM was the first time ive ever had brake fade on the bigger brake set up, but i thought it was the pads bedding in properly as id only done 50 miles on them

I'd try some good quality OEM plain disks (Brembo, ATE etc) and add some ducting to keep them cooler first. If that doesnt work then I'd look into uprated disks.

A quick google reveals.... nothing! Can't seem to find any anywhere.

Some mintex ones with standard pads on ebay for £52 + post

Try phoning round a few motorfactors to see what they supply. How much are disks from Ford?

Must be really bad quality discs, its not as if your brake setup is massive or anything, could it be badly fitted disks or non flat hubs causing the problem?

i got some of those fitted on my saxo yesterday

they are good - but anything would be an improvement on my old disks
