£25 C-CHARGE OFFICIALLY SCRAPPED?
Unpopular rise in Congestion Charge could be binned within weeks

End of *** charge as we know it?London Mayor Boris Johnson could be on the verge of scrapping the £25 Congestion Charge.

The scheme had originally been dreamt up by previous Mayor Ken Livingstone and had proved deeply unpopular.

New Mayor Johnson has already expressed his view that the £25 charge for large cars is unfair and is expected to officially scrap the proposals.

A spokesman for the Mayor told PistonHeads today that the Mayor will make the charge fairer and getting rid of a £25 hike could be one way of doing it.

Traffic lights will also be re-phased to improve the flow of traffic in the capital.

The spokesman added: ‘The Mayor is committed to making the congestion charge fairer and more effective for Londoners as swiftly as possible.

'And his view that the £25 charge for large cars is unfair is well known. He has also committed to consult, and to act on, the opinions of Londoners that live within and on the borders of the western extension of the congestion charge zone.

‘These are not changes that can be made after just over a week in charge but work has begun and the Mayor hopes to be able to announce further details of his plans within weeks.’

hurrah !

lets hope he really means it and carries it through and this isnt just some popularity stint

but considering he's obviously pro car (he's even been the "star in the reasonably priced car" on topgear.

Heres hoping its not.

this is pretty interesting as well.... there is a load of discussion on PH about how (supposedly) the lights have been rigged to worsen congestion around London (and potentially other citys) to bolster support for congestion charging. Would be interested to know if its true and see if he can make any difference :)

Great work Boris. Banning alcohol on the tube and now scrapping the high level C charge. It's nice to see someone actually trying to change things rather than just attacking people pointlessly.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was true. Where I live they are looking to get money to build a 2nd bridge so they've put in new traffic lights and generally farted around to make queues much bigger to make their case better.

From what I saw riding through London the other day, the lights are definately phased to restrict traffic flow. Down one street there was no way I could flow through as every light I came to was red. As each light went green the next one was red. Stop-start-stop-start all the way for about 2 miles. Forcing vehicles to do that is extremely bad for the environment.

Yes but if you drive a diesel you are saving the environment as you dont put out many carbons for people to tread on or some rubbish! Traffic lights everywhere are crap, I hate the ones that turn green when nothing is there and hasnt been there for a while. Sort it out government please we are tryign to help the environment not kill it by stupid subliminal propaganda.

Good move :) And I live 2 hours from London (Derby). They also scrapped the proposed congestion charging plans round here given the massive revolt Labour have just received in Council elections. Don't really take much notice of politics but it is quite pathetic to see NOW they make changes after losing confidence from the majority.

ok, Ive been on holiday for the past 2 weeks, came back last friday....when did he become mayor!? Thats great news. I (and nearly everyone else) hate ken Livingstone.

Who in their right mind would pay to get into the middle of Derby anyway? Even the train station is outside the town centre, congestion charge would have failed hard in Derby and destroyed what little shopping we have left here that isn't jammed into the monolithic ministry-of-westfield centre :)

Just under 2 weeks ago. Still only got 16% of the total vote though (that includes all eligible voters), or 32% if you include those who actually voted only.
