whatever you want to call them...

I live on the coast in north east scotland and there is quite a lot of farmland surrounding the area, so come the summer months lay-by's etc become plagued with scummy caravan folk who travel here to pick daffodils and the like for money.

Now I wouldn't normally be too bothered about this, apart from the fact that they trash whatever place they stop, leave tonnes of crap behind and there are always loads of break-ins/things going missing when they are around (coincidence?). Oh yea and one of them also stabbed someone in a town 10 miles from mine a couple of weeks ago.

About 2 weeks ago 2-3 caravans appeared in this council owned bit of land next to a very small industrial estate about 0.5 miles from my village, then last week there were 6-7 and I looked in today and there must be at least 10 now. Last year when they stopped in that area, a business in the industrial estate mysteriously had ~£95000 worth of marine grade stainless steel go missing out their yard...needless to say their security has been stepped up.

It's a small village which never has any issues with security/robbery until people like this appear - the type of place you can leave doors/sheds/cars unlocked with no worry, so when this happens people get really ****** off.

So the bottom line, does anybody know who to complain to or how to initiate a writ being produced to get rid of them? They have been moved on from local areas before by writ bearing coppers, but I don't know who makes that happen

There is a few traveller camps around Cambridge, and other then riling the locals somewhat due to the general mess they make they cause little other damage.

Try your local police station.

Have you seen the number of horses they have accumulated across the A14 between Girton and Milton?!

I live in a small village and this has always been on my mind if they ever set-up on my dads feild. I don't know think there is much you can do unless it's private land, you could go down and go RAMBO on them. :p

oh yea i'll add to the mix the fact they have random aggresive dogs tied up outside in all weather, in the lay-bys they like to tie them up to the picnic tables so the dogs are sleeping and doing their business on and around them. Picnic anyone?

edit: oh yea and the last lay-by they left had a smashed up caravan left in it and literally tonnes of rubble, they must have been offering to remove peoples rubble for money then just dumping it...

This is a common problem around my area my dad's place of work trys to keep them sweat by talking to them etc because things tend to go missing otherwise. Two things really some of their carvans are HUGE and brand new, also the cars they use to tow these are amazing. A few blacked out range rover sports and a lot of Mercades are parked up (tinkers with quality motors). Another thing we keep getting leaflets posted about laying driveways and patio's off them.

Tidy tinkers are few & far between but we do get a group here in Redditch around Xmas time, they only have horse drawn caravans & are so well behaved that the Council turn a blind eye to them as the set up camp & put their horses to graze on traffic islands & verges. When they leave there is no trace except for wear & tear from the horses hooves which soon grows over. If they were all like this then there would be respect for them & their way of life.

yea horse drawn caravans etc are more like real gypsies, which wouldn't bother me at all, unfortunately that's not the type i'm talking about. The type i'm talking about have like the parents, 8 kids and 2 grandkids in 1 caravan, a couple of mongrels tied up outside and a rusty old transit van. None of them own a horse.

I have heard some proper horror storys about the jobs they have done. Weeds and subsiding after a week of being laid. However some of them might be genuine and do a proper job?

However these familys must be pretty well off to drive round in some of the cars they do. Especally the carvans twin axle brand new carvans.

These two are linked.

Given the reputation they have for lack of quality work on new patios/driveways, I can't see that they get much business tbh.

Round where I work they own a bit of land (which will be very expensive land) and they've build cottages there with no planning permission, not to mention that they use it as an all-year caravan park which you need permission for, which they don't have.

reputation means nothing in a lot of cases, just like at the 419 scammers, so many people know about the scam but still people get caught out.
same with naive people and gypsies offering to do tarmac cheap.

Burn them with fire :D

believe me, it's crossed my mind on more than one occasion...

I can without a doubt guarantee that nobody in my village or the neighbouring village will be stupid enough to accept their business, they've been coming to areas near here for years so everyone's wise to them
