Best way to strip a door

The problem with blowlamps is that no matter how hard you try, you end up scorching the wood..

Even burning if not careful, only takes a lapse in concentration.. Nitromors is the way, but don't do it inside, its a bit potent..

yes you will raise the grain with water but on old items the 10 laters of paint will be in these grains ,trust me i used to do it on very special antiques and never one turn out bad doing it this way.

i would have though the antiques you have stripped would have been hardwood not softwood as a lot of doors are but you are right water is ok .its just i have found white spirit does a better job.another option is a hot air gun. its like a super hot hair dryer.it has the bennefits of a blowlamp but does not scorch the wood.any tool hire shop will have these.

Has no one ever heard off GOOGLE !

Oh yes I've heard of it alright - we couldn't afford a new kitchen in our first flat so we decided to strip all the cupboard doors and re varnish / new handles etc etc.

Unfortunatley I leaned the cupboard door up against the fridge freezer as I was applying the nitromors

Thank god for Tippex ;)

If it's an old door with years of paint be careful with the heat guns in case some of the paint is lead based. Not a good thing!

I've removed paint off items (bannisters, furniture, skirting and doors) with all the methods mentioned. I like the heat gun best because I find it really therapeutic peeling up great big squashy wodges of paint. Laaavely! I have 4 doors to renovate and no time though now so they're all off to be dipped!

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll make sure I wear a mask/glasses.

Thanks for all the advice. I probably don't have to do it until next week. Will let you all know how I get on. :)
