I've been on t'intarwebz for a good few years now, and have noticed that quite a few people seem to either not use smilies, or if they do use them - very rarely - Why?

Is it below them? Is it old hat/because they feel that what they write makes their point clear enough? Is it un-leet to use smilies?

I'm not pointing fingers here (well, it's a petty subject, why would anybody point fingers?).

I have no problem with smilies myself, except for maybe the infamous rolleyes (don't we all ).

What are your thoughts?

Smileys WERE cool

Then there came all the bloody annoying stupid ones all over everwhere

Smiley became annoying

Clever people use words to convey feelings, leaving stupid smileys and emoticons to 12 year olds who think we wanna see animated K's and LOL's all over the bloody place!

Their sometimes annoying, however they are useful at times as you then know if the person is being sarcastic (for example).

One friend refuses to use smileys - which is fine - but then refuses to use exclamation marks too! His emails (even when there's humour in there) tend to come across like they're being spoken by A.A. Milne's Eeyore. Very dry.

I'm a fan of the ellipsis used with exclamation or question marks, as you can really make the end of a sentence hang in the air... Don't you think..? Can often use them to convey concealed mirth..! Or a mid-sentence titter (!) at an amusing pun, word or innuendo.

I think I talk as I should on the net IRL (monotone and dull according to 'friends') but then on the net I excessively use smilies and exclamation marks. I'm a bit backwards.
