Any reason to avoid this? going to look at/possibly buy on Saturday

Crikey, he switchgear really is out of a 90's Civic!

If it's all sound when you view it, then looks pretty good to me. It's cheap, and seemingly a good'un.

If you're looking at the ZS, whay not the ZR160 - HGF?

It was a Fiesta. Thats like me going out in a 316Ti Compact and deciding that no, I will never own an M5 as a result.

I said I'd buy a Mustang.

But also in general, Ford's just do not appeal to me at all!

Whereas the MG ZS is a parragon of reliability

Did I claim that? :p

Gear stick randomly popping to neutral whilst driving (did it with everyone, not just me). Would have to wrestle it into reverse, and out of reverse.

It was just...horrible...only way to describe it.

Reverse problem if you want to call it that has ALWAYS been there. Something to do with no Synchro on reverse or some such, it's a huge pita I've learnt to live with it.

Also the thing randomly popping out has happened to be before (I have the IB5) but only a few times but yes I agree it's crap :)

A car should not be effort to drive, that reverse problem is an issue, Making it an effort to drive - it's crap imo.

Reversing in a hurry is a bit of a problem I either get lucky and it pops in first time (oooh err) or I have to double clutch it. It would make a crap get away car :D

The IB5 gearbox only comes on crap Fords anyway all the good ones have an MTX75 with none of those problems. Infact its a great box.

the ib5 gear box is awful and definately not bombproof the mtx75 which is used on the mondeo is a much better box and is bombproof except for the 3rd gear synchro

Ive never had it pop out of gear before, the gears seem really smooth and positive. I do however have the reverse gear problem, just have to make sure its gone into gear, not really a problem at all. The newer Fiestas have been known to have some gear related issues, the Fiesta i drove on my pass plus didn't engage 1st every now and again.

Bit of a bold statement.

the ib5 gear box is awful

I don't hear of many giving up at all I think they just cause a lot of frustration to the owners :p, but yea the MTX is a lot better I do know this.

How? 2.0 Focus/Mondeo, ST170, Mondeo V6, ST220, blah blah blah all MTX75 or variants thereof, isnt it?

only prefacelift ST220's have the mtx75 the facelift has a 6 speed box same as the ST170 it uses a 6 speed box not the mtx 75 :)

The problem with *** ib5 is the diff likes destroying its self it happened on the older fiestas and escorts quite regularly as a lot of them chanaged to the diesel box as it was stronger

Fair enough :)

I've been in Tom's Mondeo (at speeds we won't mention :p) and it's a brilliant car. Infact I think Mondeo's are superb cars all round. They do not appeal to me in the slightest.

Ah well - roll on Saturday :D:D:D:D:D

Yes but cars which feature the IB5 are hardly crap Fords simply not true, maybe in your world where if something doesnt provide over 150BHP of power it's automatically crap and you just posted that to provoke some sort of reaction?.

Seems like a load of crap to me. The gearbox may be crap this I completely agree with but this does not make the car carrying the box crap.

The Fiesta ST150 uses the IB5 I take it this car is now crap in your world?

The Ford Puma also used the IB5 a car which you have agreed is a decent car in the past I'm sure.

I guess this is crap now?

Friend of a friend has a Fiesta ST, he blew the gearbox out of it when it was about 2 months old iirc. Make of this what you will. They replaced it under warranty and I know he had numerous problems with the new one too.

I've deciphered from this that the gearbox is crap. This I already knew :D

Not heard many problems with them on the Focus though prob not looking hard enough. I'd be interested in Fox reply to the Puma having the box. Apparantly they're all crap now

Ref the OPs initial query, for the dosh that looks pretty good.
Nope I wouldn't have dreamt of buying one at full price, but that's clearly suffered from depreciation freefall from 10,000 feet.
I seem to remember them getting rather good road tests when new, so I'm guessing it's even a decent drive. Not sure what I'd recommend at a similar price.
If you're after a fairly rapid saloon, then an Accord TypeR would be worth checking out, they should be going towards that kind of price bracket and won't have the head gasket issues that even the v6 K series are noted for.
