50" PLASMA. £1000 TO SPEND

But the new PZ80 panasonic should be a very nice tv as well, but then up at that pricelevel it's best to spend another few 100 on the 508XD pioneer which really is the best value tv out there with its astonishing PQ!!!
I got my PZ85B for £1030 and I know the PZ80 is a good £200 cheaper than that so you could probably get the PZ80 for ~£800 (google TH42PZ80).

"a few 100" in this case is actually twice the price.

I was referring to *** 46incher at ~£1400 with eh 50 kuro at about £1600. The 42 kuro is about £1100-1200.

Just missed the 10% discount code, but theres 5% off using a discount code (easy to google). Including the £30 delivery makes the 50PX70 £789. Offer ends 19th May.

Don't flame me.

I setup loads of TV's, PVR's, DVR's etc for people because I have an affinity with cables but I don't know much about the actual TV's.
Ask me about DVR's and I'll immediately recommend Pioneer.
I've become a bit of a fan of Samsung TV's over the last year after installing quite a few BUT if you had money to spend on a 42" where would it go and why?

A Pioneer PDP428XD Kuro, which happens to be exactly what I've got.

It's by far and away the best 42" flat TV made (some fujitus dispay panels may give it a run for it's money) and it's likely to stay that way for a while since the next generation of Kuros will only be available in 50" and 60" varieties.

PDP428XD isn't 1080p though? Not sure how you can say that's future-proof...

People keep mentioning this concept of 'future-proof' that they have either been told in a shop or they've read it in a review somewhere. What is there, in the future, that these TVs have to be proofed against?

I'd advise you to read some of the other threads on 1080p / 720p that litter this forum because then you'd realise that having a TV that's 1080p makes very little difference and there are much more important aspects about TV performance that govern the quality of the picture.

Honestly, this 1080p stuff is a Marketing Twonk's wet dream.

The PDP-428XD produces a better picture (which is really the only criteria for judging a TV) than an 42" screen produced by any other manufacturer. It really is that simple.

Ah my bad. :(

Go cry in corner emo :p :D :D :D Too many model numbers out there to be honest.

PDP428XD isn't 1080p though? Not sure how you can say that's future-proof...

It's like saying a petrol car isn't future-proof. Crap example but same theory.

Just think about how much 1080p footage you will be watching on a display. normal freeview certainly isn't HD, and freesat HD is lost on me, but very much doubt that is 1080p. Even most games out there on 360 and PS3 are rated at 720p, so the only real 1080p footage will be trailers off a HTPC and 1080p blu-ray and HD-dvd films.
O and forgot to say that sky HD only does 1080i, of which 720p would be a better setting as it is progressive rather than interlaced scan.

So all in all there isn''t much 1080p footage out there, and as Asprilla said, there is a lot more to picture quality than the number of pixels. If 1080p was all that, then pioneer would hardly sell any of their 4280XD/428, 508XD tvs as they are only 720p, but in fact they are the best tvs out there for consumers. Although they cost more than other plasmas liek the panasonics, the difference in picture quality is clearly visible, especially in the blacks.

So if possible stretch to a kuro, sell the kids, the wife/gf, and let your eyes enjoy :D

The most annoying thing about LCD's for me is the viewing angles.

I was sat slightly below my TV and my god, the black levels were terrible and the top half of the screen was considerably brighter than the middle/bottom.

Now that I'm actually above the TV a bit after moving my room around and redecorating the black levels are pretty good, well about 100x better than what they were before. I thought my TV was just poor rather than viewing angles. :o

Anyway, if you honestly think you will watch a lot of 1080P content then I'd go for that, for PC use 1080P is a massive leap over 720, Xbox 360/PS3 not so much. For Blu-Ray/HD-DVD again you will benefit with the extra resolution depending on your viewing distance.

Id take that with its blur proof and tear proofing functions over my 1080p M86 LCD, w00t.

Maybe its future proof that it doesnt annoy you so you want a new TV 3 months later?

I got myself a real bargain last week. 50" panasonic PX70 for £700. a local electrical retailer in aintree,Liverpool Moved to a new site and on opening day everything was 10% off plus the px70 on display was the last one they had i got an extra £120 nocked off the price so it went from £899 down to £700, delivered (within 1 hour). I got myself a wall mounting bracket from another store for around £50. The GF was a bit shocked as i only when to the retail park to get some screws from the d.i.y. store. This plasma t.v. has a better picture than all my mates/family's Sharp/samsung/Toshiba L.C.D.'s. When I watch football i only see one ball and not 3 like some of my mates do :D
So to sum up, GET A PANNY.

Fantastic deal you got there. Love watching football on a plasma, just as you say it's good seeing one ball with one player rather than a clone fest ;)

Wow, they must have been terrible LCD's then.

Generally speaking, for TV viewing Plasma is currently better in almost every catagory.

LCD is cheaper to produce and the margins are better which is why companies push it at us.

If you think otherwise then you've not looked at a plasma for many years or you like your TV over sharp and over saturated.

Thanks to this thread, I've ordered a 50PX70. The 42 has been excellent these last 12 months but I've got the 50 for £789 and a neighbour is buying the 42 for £500 so hasn't cost the earth for those extra 8" :D

Right the cheapest I can get this is 1300 and there is only a few left around now.
If I can get the px for 800 is the pz worth 500 more.
I might use it for with a media pc now so what would the px be like for gaming.
Would it be worth 500 more?
I could build a media pc for that!!

Aaaaaargh help!

I know Plasma is better and I know some LCD's have crap Freeview/SD performance.

Got a Plasma downstairs and it's a smoother image than my LCD but that's the only real difference I care to notice, my last LCD had terrible SD performance though.
