Hey,

I've got 2 house cats, they're sisters and have never been apart. They are about 3 years old now. In the past 5 months or so they won't go near each other, they hiss and fight. Before they'd sleep on each other and so on.

It's like they've had an argument over food or something.

Anyone else experience this or got any tips how to force them to get on! I thought about shoving them in a small box for a week or so but I don't want to be too mean.

could be that as they become older they have become territorial and the bond has become broken. if this is the case i would think it would be unlikley to resolve this

I guess they will work it out for themselves. Have they become sexually mature or anything like that?

Now that they are older, its going to get down to the territory thing, especially as they are both female.

We had 2 British Blue females and had to sell one as they were getting pretty miffed off with each other. They would keep spraying everywhere.

Expect some quality scrapping :D

maybe they've got their eye on the same mancat. In my experience, you cant force animals to get on though, you could try keeping them apart for a bit and see if they naturally go back to eachother (feed them in different rooms etc).

Are they both the same sex and are they neutered? Neutered tom cats appear to get on fine most of the time but spayed females will sometimes fall out more often.

Cats will have tiffs and fall out. There's nothing you can do really. Best to leave them to sort it out and keep a water spray handy for if they get into a fight. One quick spray usually breaks it up.

EDIT: Aha! You answered as I posted!

So what you're suggesting is I drown one of them?

No as that would stupid. They will work out their own parts of the house of the garden and stick to them. Just means that when they do come together you will need to put up with the fighting.

I had two cats that went a similar way, eventually one of them ran away and I never saw him again. his sister is still with us and is 17 years old now.

our cat had kittens. kept one and then the others went to neighbours

the kittens who are now cats all still get on. the mother hates them all now. attacking them at random intervals :p

I've currently got 3 kittens, all were feral and from different places.

The first one I got, Diva, was tamed when I had her. I then got Aslan who was untamed and a month older than Diva. They got on well and she brought him out of himself. Decided I had room for one more a few months later and got Ember, another untamed female.

Diva was very jealous of Ember at first and as Top Cat made sure she knew who was boss. Aslan and Ember were ok. They all now get on very well with Diva taking on a role as Ember's mum despite only being 3 months older than her, as you can see from this picture where she's giving her a good wash!

you called your cat top cat?? legend!!!

nice work :D

Yeah they do fall out. We had two sisters who fell out after they were neutered :( Sadly the submissive one ran away to get away from the dominant one. We put missing posters up and got her back for a week but she ran away again. Apparently there was a pack of feral cats living in some nearby woods, so I like to think she had a reasonable life in the wild with them or got taken in by a nice old lady :(

You may want to speak to your vet. He/she may suggest hormone treatment, or a hormone spray for use in various places around the house. My ex has more cats than braincells and when hers didn't get along (she was a vet and used to take the sick strays home with her) she would feed the offenders on top of the other's sleeping blanket (in the usual eating aera), so they'd associate the smell with something they enjoyed doing. Worked for cats and dogs in the same household too.

She's with the feral cats and theyre going to come back and mount an assault on the dominant cat :p

Jokes aside, best of luck finding if you are looking, i dont know what id do if one of my cats ran away :(

Ah this was years ago - the one that ran away is probably dead now :( given that the dominant one doesn't hunt anymore. My parents have moved away from the area too.

I think cat karma struck with the dominant one though with the amount of hassle she's had with toms in the new neighbourhood.
