Nissan 200SX

Got my G plate S13 for £600 off ebay. Had it 11 months before mr Turbo blew up (my fault as you will see). It cost:

Battery - £40
Tyres x 2 - £170 (only needed one but wanted uniform rear tyres)
Standard Exhaust - £110 (was skint!)

For the MOT:

ABS unit - £50 from Jap autospares in stockton.

I also sold it for £200 when the turbo died. Basically, my local garage must have given it to their apprentice to service and it leaked oil from then on. Didn't check it regularl enough until one day, bye bye Mr turbo :(

One thing to check out though - the sills on mine looked as though they had been welded. In reality, underneath, they were as rotten as a carrot. Not a good thing!!!!

Intriguing

Being they are technically the same engine, I wonder if this is something that can be upgraded too.

wouldnt bother, just gets a big valve head and some wild cams.
if you want divability / flexibility that is of cause another matter.

the gtir t28 is superior to the trim you get on the s14 t28 turbo, flows so much more power! and only has a fraction more lag. great turbo to plonk on a s13! just a great turbo in general seen as you can pick them up for 100-200bux used.

a heck of a lot of engines are using variable inlet camshaft systems without really bothering listing it in the brochure, audi and vw have been using vvt systems for ages on a lot of there mundane 4,5 and 6 pot motors mainly for smooth engine power output and fuel mileage not particularly performance orientated, goes for a lot of manufacture i think.
same with variable intake manifolds, once a performance item now a common place in modern humdrum motors.

VVT too? Learn something new everyday... :D

Yep the cam phase switches in a bit after tickover when you move off which improves tickover/emmisions and increases low down and midrange torque and switches off when over around 5500 rpm to prevent detonation. If you look at this old RR graph, you can see the switch off point on the red trace quite easily.

Thought i would do a search on the 200sx and have come across this golden oldie thread :).

I am goin to look at a 200sx tomorrow, as i am looking to buy one as my next car after my renewal and wanted to check one out up close to see if they are for me.

It's a 2000 plate 'W' reg S14a, done 70k and only had the exhaust done, K&N filter and lowered on K&R springs. Is being sold for £4.5k so basically the advice i am looking for is:

1: Is the valuation about right
2: Anything in particular i should look out for.

I have heard that the wheel fixings need to be checked for leaks, and the turbo is susceptible to failing - are there any tell-tail signs regarding this.

Any other help would be much appreciated :D

i paid 5k for my 1999 V reg 4 years ago with above average mileage but FSH so i think its a bit over priced unless its absolutely mint with FSH, dont be put of with high mileage as they can take it well if serviced properly.

simple mods like intake, full exhaust and boost increase give them a healthy power hike.

Don't know about the VVT on them, all I know is that it makes an awful noise in most of them, sounds like the bottom end is knocking, not good. Must be a different system to that fitted on the 300zx as they don't really suffer problems. Interestingly though, it was removed in the later models, to improve emissions of all things.

I tend to exaggerate, by dog slow I really mean boost is addictive and a measly 200hp will get boring very quickly.

good reason not to buy a turbo car lol, it will be the end of your bank balance :p

The little mods are all good until the engine blows up, then of course it's forged internals and big turbo's and such, a short road to poverty :D

standard 200sx's really arent very quick are they?, I thought they were far quicker than what parkers quotes

in comparison to what? In my opinion not many standard cars are quick at all unless you start paying mucho mucho moneys

i think you'll find in standard form they dont "feel" quick but they're not bad, fit an air filter, manual boost controller (gets rid of boost restrictions in 1st 2nd gear) and a cat back exhaust and you;ll be grinning :)
