I've only had this camera since xmas, but today it seems to have developed a malfunction. I've not used it for a little while because of exams, so I find it even more strange that it has suddenly decided to break. The problem is with the in-built flash, which doesn't seem to like being activated. I thought I could better describe the problem in a video...here.

You will see that the flash latch goes crazy whenever the flash pops up. The camera is then inoperable due to Err99.

Tell me what you think. What's going on?

1. Carefully clean the 8 gold color lens contact pins on the camera body
lens mount with a pencil eraser (or something that will clean them throughly) Do this while holding the camera so that
any eraser dust will not fall into the camera.(upside down)

2. Take out both batteries. Yes, there are 2. I had forgotten about the
smaller Date/Time battery. Also remove the CF memory card.

3. With the batteries removed, turn the camera switch on for 3-5 minutes.
He said that this clears the memory.

4. Turn the camera off and put the batteries and CF card back in.

5. Re-attach the lens and turn it back on.

Stolen from a google search but it was the first on the list for err99. Got to wonder why you havent tried that first.
Most answers say its a problem with the connection to the lens, and that the noise is actually the shutter not the flash.
Take it off clean it and put it back on.

Hi Chronic. Yes I have tried all of the above...apologies for not mentioning. From further research, it becomes apparent that Err99 is simply the classification given to errors not already classified...so it could be anything! That's why I was rather hoping someone else had experienced this same issue, or someone might know what is causing it.

And no it's definately the flash latch making the noise, not the shutter. You can clearly see it flicking back and forth as well in the video.

Ok, fair i made a bit of an assumption.

Have you tried it in the light? As you have it on auto, it what seem to be a poorly lit room (i.e the lamp) its trying to use the flash.
This would narrow it down to the flash being faulty, and would allow you to try and fix that part.

I cant image it has dirt in the mechanism as it opened (however i would recommend that you look about the latch to try and clean it), possibly the flash wire itself has broken and the camera knows, as when i open my 400d in auto, in low light the flash goes off repeatedly to allow the lense to focus.

seems a comon error with the 400D and the flash nd err99 - send of an email to canon and if its still in warranty they can get it sorted for you . If its out of warranty they will send you an estimate before any work will be done.

think of it as a gift because onboard flash is so awful no one should ever have to use it
