Running a Abit IP35-E

I had a E2160 which I sold and I could never get it to run higher than 370 FSB (9x370) I could not test 8x400 because the cpu didn't allow me to change to a lower multi.

I switched it for a E4400 where the guy said he always ran it at 8x400 so I thought I could try 370+ fsb with that. Now it seems I can't get it to run at 400Mhz.... isn't that very low for a P35 board, I mean... for a Abit IP35-E? It's rock stable up to 370 :)

10x340 = go
9x370 = go
7x400 = no go
8x400 = no go
9x400 = no go
6x245 = no go

my ip35-e will boot into windows at 400x8 without even changing the voltage (q6600)

not stable, but im sure a bump in voltage will fix that if i tried

have you tried lowering the ram speed?

Argh, that sounds much better then this 370 :S my ram is at 1:1.00 so running at 800Mhz, it will do 1000Mhz 5-5-5-12 no problem... so I don't think it's a RAM problem...

I bought the IP35-E second hand pretty cheap so maybe this is why the guy sold it lol? :p

Well the E21*0 range are well known for having FSB walls as low as 370mhz, and I've seen examples of the E4*00's having the same problems, so you may just be very unlucky to have two chips like that.

The board should be capable of near 500mhz with the right dual-core chip.

Oof, so I might be really unlucky here ... But the thing is, the guy who sold it to me said he was running it at 8x400Mhz and he provided me with a screenshot of it. Ofcourse it could be a fake screenshot...

Is there a way of finding out for certain if it's the motherboard or the cpu? Seems to me like I've tested it all and it is the motherboard but you made me wonder Cob :) I don't have another chip here to test it.

One of the E6*00 range would be the best bet to check the FSB, unless you can pick up an E21*0 or E4*00 that you know for a fact can do 400mhz.

It is possible that the board is causing the problem, but I think you'd be even more unlucky if that was the case.

I see that you are running 4Gb of Ballistix 6400.
Is that 4x1GB?
If so have you adjusted mch voltage at all?
Also, have you tried upping VTT at all as that usually helps you hit higher fsb on the CPU?

I've got my MCH at 1.65v (default is 1.25v)

CPU VTT is the FSB voltage? What is save to try? I'm trying some stuff right now at 380Mhz FSB.

What about the GLTREF, I read on some other forum 67% would be better but I dunno... Should just leave it at 63&?

It has just boot up on 380Mhz :D put the VTT on 1.35 I think...

EDIT:

385 is a go with a higher VTT but 390 / 400 really won't do, even with maximum VTT. Guess it's just the board then maybe...

Also can someone tell me what the max safe settings are for the following settings, I'll save them in a text file:

CPU VTT
MCH
ICH

The MCH is far too high at 1.65v. Shouldn't need to be much more than 1.4-1.45v with 4 sticks of memory.

Try upping the GLTREF to as high as 72%. Tho it won't may a huge difference.

Ok will do! Thanks for the help Cob, appreciated:)

GTLRef only really seems to come into play with quads.

Is the Ballistix new as I believe that they recently changed the memory modules that they were using & the new stuff isn't as good.
You do have it at 2.2V?
Also, if you only use 2 DIMMs will it go any higher?

I'm surprised the IP35-E has the GTLRef setting.

It does have more effect on quads, but it made the difference between 3.3ghz and 3.5ghz on the E2180 I had in my IP35-Pro.

But it won't work miracles with a chip with a low FSB wall.

Well, I bought 2 sets of 2x1GB Crucial Ballistix PC6400 4-4-4-12 from a guy in the United States. They were sealed and new but I don't know how long he had them. They are at 2.2v. But I thought the ram doesn't really matter as I use the ratio setting and they do 1000Mhz 5-5-5-15 at this moment, so 800Mhz 5-5-5-15 shouldn't be a problem then or is there a link there I don't know? :) That's why I haven't tried iwith 2 DIMM's.
