Can anyone recommend anything within these genres?

Hopefully with a few song titles I can check out on youtube or lastfm and maybe someone I might still be able to check out in a concert locally.

Hmmm well I don't know too much about punk and metal. I would be more of a rock fan I guess. Heaviest stuff would be Metallica maybe? Iron Maiden are okay from what I've heard. I like a lot of classic rock, like AC/DC, i like grunge like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. I like the Clash, Tsunami Bomb... System of a Down.

Tbh it's the new missus says she is into they two genres and wants to go to gigs but she is into Avenged Sevenfold, Down and named half a dozen other bands I'd never heard of, I checked out Avenged Sevenfold and hated them so hopefully there is something better in the genre.

Well it depends how heavy you want your metal to be. If you hated avenged sevenfold, then there isn't really a lot else that's a bit lighter :p

Although you may want to give the deftones a listen. A lot of their old stuff is quite heavy while the newer stuff is more suited maybe for someone of your taste :)

Older songs:

From the new album:

yeah I can't stand Avenged Sevenfold

Nevermore - This Godless Endevour
Machine Head - The Blackening
Deftones - White Pony
Pitchshifter - www.pitchshifter.com
Rammstein - Mutter
36 Crazyfists - Heart Shaped Romance
Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder
In Flames - Clayman
Shadows Fall - Art of Balance
Mastodon - Leviathan
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Tool - Aenima

Theres a range of metal along with an album i recommend, pretty wide range of stuff so if you find something you like post back and I'll look for stuff similar to that. Punk isn't really my thing so I'll let someone else address that :)

I don't mind heavier than Avenged Sevenfold - my major criticism is that they sounded like 'soft' metal. Deftones are alright, some tracks are very good but others are a bit scream-y for me. I'll have a proper look through what albums I have when I get in from work tonight.

Try:
Hatebreed
In Flames
Parkway Drive
Job For A Cowboy
Gojira
Spineshank
Waterdown
Machine Head
Soulfly
Children Of Bodom
Chimaira
Fear Factory
Strapping Young Lad
Rancid

Reel Big Fish
MXPX
Millencolin
Guttermouth

Capdown
Less Than Jake

Don't even bother asking here. You'll get 1000 recommendations and after that people will just start naming any band they like, from Pink Floyd to Outkast. Then there'll be the arguments about "band X are not metal" etc.

If you know one or two bands you enjoy, just look for similar artists on Last FM, that's the best way.

angels and airwaves :)
plus 44
alkaline trio
TBS
mxpx
cartel
box car racer
jimmy eat world

Not true, maybe he'd like Pendulum though? I've heard they're a bit metal :p
