I am building my parents a new HTPC but they would like to get it hooked up to FREESAT so they can get HD stuff rather than just SD on freeview.

What is the best TV-Card to be used with Freesat?

I read in a recent magazine (think it was this months PC PRO) that the WinTV-NOVA-S-Plus will recieve freesat.

However in the mag while Happauge say it will, the BBC say it wont and that it is not an official licenced product! It is really not clear on the Happauge site.

On the Happauge forums it states that there are people using the card at the moment to recieve BBC HD and Luxe TV.

I am also very interested in this to use with my Vista media centre

As far as I know Vista Media Center doesn't support DVB-S cards.

I'm currently using a SkyStar 2 DVB-S card and mediaportal to receive BBC-HD but don't expect it to work out of the box. It takes a lot of effect to set it up correctly and I wouldn't describe it as completely stable.

I also tried a Fire-DTV card but after 6 months of limited sucess, I gave up.

I have found the article. IT is in July's issue of PC World Mag Page 12.

In summary

Hauppauge say that the Nova-s USB will receive freesat and it already is working with BBC HD Etc.

The BBC/ITV declined to confirm this and added, "We would like to clarify that the Hauppauge Free to air USB satellite tuner is not a Freesat licensed product and as such will not receive Freestat services"

Ahhhhhh

Sounds like BBC just want people to buy products that are "freesat certified", guessing they make money off that or something? I doubt Hauppauge would lie about their card picking up the channels, the repercussion wouldn't do them well at all.

As BBC-HD is broadcast using the DVB-S standard any DVB-S card can pick it up. HD channels by other broadcasters will probably use DVB-S2 and therefore require a DVB-S2 card.
