I was reading an article about people going "off grid" - ie: avoiding being tracked by the army of CCTV cameras etc and came across this interesting snippet:

"At night, use an infra-red light bulb to illuminate your numberplate. CCTV, like all video cameras, operates in that part of the spectrum near infra-red, so such a bulb above the number will flood the camera and is legal at the time of writing. "

This might have been posted before but couldn't find it with search. Sounds like an interesting idea to me. :)

And patrol cars at night will stop you for trying to evade detection and slap you with a fine and possibly a summons. Was on one of the police shows a few months ago, only the suspect used a spray, rather than a bulb, but it had the same effect (empty numberplate in the police car's systems).

The company I work for develops and makes ANPR systems amongst other things.

The above doesn't work on our kit...

I would have thought a bulb isn't actually tampering with the number plate, whereas a spray most definitely is. If it's legal (not claiming that the Times are right) then surely they couldn't fine you for it either. I'm not going to try this myself, I just read it and found it interesting, that's all :D

Legal or not, they will stop you, will question you about it, and might fine you regardless.

You then have endless hassle (getting stopped all the time, trying to reclaim the fine) and I have to wonder, is it really worth it if you have nothing to hide? :)

I live a few minutes from them but work miles away.

We can get a plate up to 60 degrees from the camera, up to 125-ish mph and in heavy rain.

So over 130 and im ok? :p

What was it for the speed cameras aswell? 170? just need to find a way to evade helicopters now.... :o

In terms of getting away and top speeds of cars + helicopters its means FA, you have to follow the roads, it doesn't, tbh you stand little chance once the chopper is after you, best you could do is outlast its fuel supply, but then they break out the plane.

Yea was just speculating though :p and I bet their fuel consumption is better than my bike, at constant 170 id probably run out in 90 miles if that.

Regarding the legality of these bulbs, you must remember that whilst fitting the bulb is not illegal, intent on evading the law is illegal.
