Not sure if ive started suffering from this i dont want it to turn into a medical thread, but not matter what time i go to sleep or get into bed, i physically cannot fall asleep.

I use to be able to until up about 1 1/2 months ago, before i suffered from glandular fever, how does everybody else seem to get to sleep? just lay there?

do you have any tips for me to try and get sleep at normal hours like everyone else?

Try blend up a banana or 2 in milk and drink it.

They some how make your brain release/create more of a chemical that will make you relaxed and help you sleep.

And if that doesnt work ill just say what most people will say on here.

Go bash one out:p

yep milk has a substance that helps sleeping, i use to do that too around 30min before going to bed i'd do a hot milk with a bit of honey(yummy :D) then read my book for a few mins then usually sleep well. I must say tho that it doesn't always work.

I have problems to sleep sometimes as well i searched a little bit the net to see "tips", the most important thing i would say is not to be too hard on it, if you always keep thinking, "ergh i cant sleep" you actually wont sleep ;)

I also read that creating some sort of "ritual" before going to bed helps a lot. Like for me drinking a hot milk, then reading a little bit in bed, so your body knows "Ahh it's soon time to sleep!" Also going to sleep at the same time everyday helps apparently!

I hope this helps, dont get too worried about it tho because it gets worse then, just try to be really relaxed when going to bed and not nervous about it because you gamed 10min before or watched a violent movie! Don't know if i'm really clear but i tried ;)

Tryptophan :p

I can ALWAYS sleep. Could go to sleep now if I wanted. It's annoying because I can easily sleep for 14 hours a day, which can be a big waste of time!

do a bit of excersise before you go to bed so that you are physically drained!

Get up earlier in the morning, if you can clock on earlier at work youll be quids in, if not do some housework... then when you get in at night and its time to turn in you should be physically more drained than just sitting around for an extra hour on a night time to stretch the night out.
I take it when you had glandular fever you were layed up for a few days?

Yeh still am pretty much just about got the back end of it now, i dont work, unis come to a standstill at the moment, bit crappy tbh.

Recently I've been having problems staying awake! I went to bed for 11 yesterday and I was out cold.

Don't sleep excessively too.

Excercise for winz!

I know the feeling mate, and its terrible :( When i sleep at my gf's house i often have issues sleeping, guess because im not too used to her bed or something and when i go to work it's really tough, working in front of a computer coding c without enough sleep is quite a fight against your eyes :p Thank god for Coffee

I hope you can sort that problem out, i wouldn't advise doing exercise right before going to bed because your body will be too excited to sleep. I don't know if you drink a lot of coffee as well but maybe that could be something to look at ? Alcohol before sleep is also a no-no at least for me but it depends if you are completly drunk then maybe it helps! ;)

That's rather obvious isn't it? :o

Insomniac is a nasty thing, I went through a really crappy time when I couldn't sleep for about 1/2 years but I've never had problems since :)

Well maybe it's obvious but someone just advised him to do exercise just before going to sleep so.. :p

I used to have a real problem with insomnia.. The only way I can describe it is that I couldn't stop thinking about stuff and wind down, I used to joke that the voices kept me awake at night.. I literally tried everything I could think of, in the end the only thing that helps me drift off is leaving the telly on with the sound down low so I concentrate on that rather than my thoughts going mental and keeping me awake...

I also have a friend who had insomnia really bad, his doctor sent him to someone that specialises in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. He swears by it and says it's helped him sleep better than he has in years... I keep meaning to try it myself, but as long as the TV is working I guess I'll just stick with that...

Routine is the most important, if i slip out of my routine I can kiss good bye to decent sleep for a good couple of days.. things that you may find help:

* No tea or coffee after 3pm
* Establish an evening rotinue.. i.e. dinner at a regular time, bath/shower at a regular time etc..
* Give yourself some time to switch off before going to bed, I tend to just go relax in the shower for 20 mins before I go to bed, but make sure you arent watching tv/computer/reading you need to calm your brain down
* Milk, as suggested is excellent
* Sex... with partner is probably more of a workout so preferable :P
* If you cant sleep dont lay in bed! get up... I walk up and down the garden a couple of times then try again to sleep, repeat process if necessary.. worst thing is to lay in bed and get irritated
