Where to go on holiday?

The girlfriend keeps going on about a summer holiday and seeing as I promised her last year, we need to get something booked ASAP.

Now, i've never been on a "summer holiday", i've always been away for 3-4 days at a time to places like Prague, Amsterdam, Barcelona etc with mates. The idea of laying on a sunbed all day in the baking heat does nothing for me, and surrounded by hundreds of people doing the exact same thing makes it seem even worse. Makes me annoyed in a way to see all those beautiful places just turned into commercial tourist spots.

Anyway, enough of the reasons why I don't want to go! We've had a quick look online, Thomas Cook, Thompsonfly etc but nothing is really catching our eye. Don't want to spend too much either as i've just got back from Dam and i'l be going away again in Septemeber and November. Looking to go late June/early July.

Can anyone suggest anywhere with the following criteria?

- Up to £300 each for a week including flights/hotel/transfer
- No loud/drunken Brits
- We don't want to be stuck in the resort all day, we like to get out and visit places/attractions
- Not too touristy but not in the middle of nowhere
- I don't mind kids but it'd be better if it wasn't a dedicated family resort
- A beach within walking distance would be nice
- Although I try and learn a few basic phrases of their language it'd be best if they understood English to a certain degree!

Thanks!

£300 is a pretty low budget. You could probably get some cheap deal on lastminute.com to Greece or something.

Before booking do a search for the hotel on TripAdvisor.com to make sure you're not staying at a ****-hole!

I'd try the costa brava (pick your spot carefully) there will be a beach and barcelona is close by so you could always take you missus round there for a day.

Tossa de Mar - one of my favourite places in Spain. Haven't been for a few years but it shouldn't have changed much. It's a fairly small town; well-used to tourists but not too touristy. Nice beach, nice restaurants, nice atmosphere. Lloret de Mar is nearby but not too nearby if you want anything touristy, Barcelona is within reach by train or bus.

I was being serious when I said cambridge! There are lots of places in the uk much nicer than the cheap overcrowded european resorts. Dorset/Cornwall if beach is necessary.

Yeah, I know it's fairly low but it's not really a priority of mine to be fair.

Thats a point, out of about 10 hotels we looked at, we checked Google for reviews on them and over half of them were faily shocking to read!

Cheers mate, will look into that. Sounds ideal. :)

I know how you feel. I am so skint right now and I don't really want a holiday because of this and due to a family loss 5 weeks ago, yet my girlfriend has been going ON AND ON about a holiday to the point where she ended up booking some flights to Montpellier (we were planning to tour South France with a rental car, then visit my mum in Toulouse)

We had a massive argument about it last night :(
I HATE planning holidays.

How about Malta?, I've never been but I understand that it is very ''English'', or the small island just off Malta (Gozo ) which is quite rural.

Cheers all. Been looking at the places suggested so far and probably going to book somewhere tonight.

Any more suggestions quickly? :p
