Going to buy a PS3 on Friday - should I? If I do, will this work?

Hi

I'm about to go and buy a PS3 on Friday with GT5: Prologue and GTA IV

My TV only has one HDMI input so I want to pass the HDMI through a switch box (along with my HD DVD player) to use the HDMI output from the PS3

I have also planned to have the sound from the PS3 on a set of analogue speakers - does the PS3 have an analogue Left & Right channel output which can be used in conjunction with the HDMI output?

Finally, should I buy one? Stock seems to be limited (at least in Canterbury and Margate) and I've heard rumours of a new 80GB model coming. If this is the case, does anyone have any idea of price? £300 is my absolute limit so if the 80GB is more expensive then it won't be suitable really

Many thanks

Alistair

Thanks :)

The reason I wanted the analogue channel is the speakers on the TV are shocking and it's a cheap TV so the sound sent via HDMI doesn't come out of the external speaker output on the TV!

a) I'd wait for the 80GB+ backwards compatible, rumble PS3 that will (I think) be coming sometime this year.
b) If you really need a new toy and are happy to take the hit (I nearly am) grab one, grab a Dual Shock 3 with the console and give your mates / mrs the six-axis when playing 2 player.
c) Consider a 360 which offers better bang for bucks (imo) with GTA IV and PGR4 for less and wait for the full GT5 PS3 experience next year (if you still feel you want to).

Depending on whether you prefer more american games (360, eg hao 3,pgr 4 forza 2 gears of war) or Japenese ( ff mgs, gt5, kz2, lbp) get the console with the games you want. Or get a ps3 if you want blu ray.

You may have thought about it but it doesnt hurt to consider other options.

I've definitely been giving it some thought - it's a lot of money and a difficult decision! :)

The killer game I want is GTA IV and that is cross platform

My housemate has a 360 and it's great (so there's no real need to have two) but he's moving out in a few months

Blu-Ray is a definite bonus - I've got an HD DVD player but supported the wrong format! At least I can get loads of super cheap HD DVDs at the moment! :)

GT5 looks great, as does Uncharted (both PS3 exclusives). I was also looking forward to Haze but that has been receiving rather poor reviews.

Tricky decision really but I'm definitely leaning towards a PS3 due to GT5/Uncharted/Blu-Ray

GT5 isn't out yet, only Prologue which is massively underwhelming and a glorified demo for it's £25 price tag.

Uncharted is very good though (but short and has no MP).

I disagree with that. Prologue is very fun with the wheel. Everything behaves as I expect and the cars are beautifully modeled. It's lasted longer than motorstorm did for me.

You need to justify your statements more often as unqualified statements will cause attacks.

The PS3 DOES have analogue audio, use the supplied cable to do so. You just have to set the PS3 up to do so, HDMI for video, analogue for audio.

Go for it dude and enjoy! If your set on the PS3 go for it and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

GT5P is worth it. Dont listen to Nokkon :D

They should be "patching" it soon as well to make the online mode better and introducing a damage system to the cars. Can get it for £20 or less if you look around. Which is a great price considering most ps3 games are at least £34 - £40

Find it much more enjoyable than Motorstorm (the only other racer ive played on ps3)

Its a good time to be a ps3 owner....won the HD war and Quite a few big games incoming and things are only gonna get better (see late 2008/2009 lineup) e.g. MGS4 in June
:D

I might have been thinking about 5.1 channel output then if so than I apologise

I have used HDMI switch boxes and they work fine. I sometimes use my PS3 on a monitor and use a HDMI-DVI lead and plug the audio from the standard PS composit connector into my hifi - no problems at all and it's easy to setup in the settings menu.
