Going to buy a PS3 on Friday - should I? If I do, will this work?

Hi

Yeah - I've posted in that thread! A few weeks ago before GTA IV there was plenty of stock but not at the moment!

Thanks for the replies - I was just after the two channel analogue sound (should have made that clearer) so that's good that the PS3 has that facility

a) I'd wait for the 80GB+ backwards compatible, rumble PS3 that will (I think) be coming sometime this year.

Well Im waiting for the 120gb, slimline, crystal white, holgram version coming the year after that :p:rolleyes:

Don't wait as therewill forever be something new on the market. You can easily whack a new 320gb HDD in for about £60.

b) If you really need a new toy and are happy to take the hit (I nearly am) grab one, grab a Dual Shock 3 with the console and give your mates / mrs the six-axis when playing 2 player.

Done the same, *** dual shock is amazing, plus get the Giotek/Giotech triggers that go on L2 and R2, much improved.

c) Consider a 360 which offers better bang for bucks (imo) with GTA IV and PGR4 for less and wait for the full GT5 PS3 experience next year (if you still feel you want to).

Consider a 360 if all you do is game and play online. As said the PS3 is an amazing blu-ray player and upscales dvds better than anything I have seen, plus it is very very quiet. Grab GTA4, burnout paradise, COD4, and probably uncharted. But get GTA4 first as you won't be playing anything else for a while.

Does your tv have analogue RCA audio outputs. I feed my plasma with the HDMI from the PS3 for video and audio, but then connect the RCA audio outputs from the tv (red and white sockets) to my integrated amp feeding my speakers :D

Get your card out and get spending :p

I bought a PS3 on Monday, and I'm very impressed with it so far. It's an expensive bit of kit (decided to treat myself for finishing 3 years of uni), but it oozes quality. The interface is very nicely laid out and looks great, it's got more functionality than the 360 (the web browser for example), and the unit itself is ridiculously quiet. In many respects, you're getting what you pay for. Even the start-up sequence/animation is cool, and not overstated.

The downsides I've noticed are that the online aspect - the PS Network etc - is far less mature than Xbox Live. I've not tried any online gaming yet but the online store has hardly anything really, and it's not laid out too well (but then, neither is the 360's). That said, there are a fair few PS1 games available for download for only £3,49, which is cheap (tempted by Syphon Filter 3, never played that one). Demos are quick to download but unlike the 360, they need to be installed which can take a little while. Same goes for games, only experienced GTA4 so far but that took maybe 6-7 mins. No big deal really, but then I'm largely a PC gamer so I'm used to installing. Plenty of HDD space at least for all of that though.

All-in-all, it's an extremely nice machine, and I'm certainly glad I got one. Just waiting for the cables I need to connect it to my 20" PC display so I can enjoy HD. :)

Bought one this morning and I've just finished setting it up!

As hoped (and advised in this thread) it works fine when using the HDMI for video at the same time as the AV cable for analogue audio, both through switch boxes

Thanks for your replies
