So my parents just brought me back a shot glass from their visit to San Francisco, and on the glass is a grey image of the golden gate bridge with 'San Francisco' written underneath it.
However, on the side of the glass is a sticker saying "Warning: the materials used as coloured decorations on the exterior of this product contain lead and/or cadmium, chemicals which are known to the state of california to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm".

Can someone please explain why they would use toxic chemicals on a drinking glass

Most dyes / paints / plastics contain chemicals which have the potential to cause cancer. But, you have to swallow a load of it over a considerable timeframe for it to possibly cause any harm (and even then it would be no more dangerous than the chemicals drinks, smoke, sprays etc)

As it was made in the USA (where you can be sued for sneezing the wrong way) they are just covering their ass so to say. If they didn't have the warning, someone would hire some magical lawyer to convince a jury the coloured writing on the glass was the cause of their throat cancer (even though they had smoked 120 a day) - and get that $4million.

It doesn't state whether it's ingestion of the chemicals which is dangerous. It could be killing off your man gravy as you sit by it. Hide in the cupboard.

It's a fairly standard warning on a lot of things from the states.
I've seen it on all sorts - including airbrush needles and spares.

I don't suspect it will be long before the UK's blame culture takes off as far as the states has. :(

I dont know why it always singles out california though. We get exactly the same warnings on boxes of Tungsten Carbide tips too . . .

different laws in different states i guess - hence why the warning for california!
