9600GT (512mb) > 3870/3850 (512mb)?

It wins some and loses some. Personally I'd choose the 38xx series because they are so easy to pencil mod, but the 9600GT is definitely a serious contender and possibly the winner.

Id say the 3870 is faster than the 9600 GT, but only just, 3850 is the slowest.

Looking at the prices of those 9600 GT's though, id go for the faster 8800 GT if i was buying, as its cheaper at only £105 (apart from the OcUK 9600 GT which is only £99, and its faster than all of em. :)

if it is only a bit faster than I am not bothered, the clocks on your 3850 are huge (higher than 3870)- I would not try that on mine as I might do in the card

also, what does pencil mod mean - is it altering the voltage?

yes, the price is too close to 8800gt and is even more the case now than when it came out - it should be 75ish

You're not going to ruin the card, even if you do pencil mod, I've put over 1.6v through my GPU and benched over 1ghz and it's still running strong.

And yes, pencil modding is shading a resistor on the back of the card to increase vGPU.

Your 3850 should do at least 3870 clocks on stock voltage.

Buy a new 8800GT for around £100. It will beat all 3 comfortably and only costs a couple of quid more.

Couldn't agree more. No point messing about with cards that are £5-£10 cheaper if you are someone that is bothered about fps in modern games

yes, 8800gt is significantly faster, but i paid 65 for my 3850 so I think I am just about OK on 'bang for buck'
