Hi all,

I've recently been offered by a friend, his E6400 which overclocks to 4GHz stable on air for my Q6600 which has a high VID and barely overclocks at all. He has also offered me his cooler (Big Typhoon). Would any of you guys accept? 2.4GHz Quad for 4GHz Dual Core a good deal?

TIA,

firstly what did you build your pc for and what did your mate build his for?

secondly have you tried the chip out on your own MB?

thirdly have you asked for advise on OCing your q6600?

WE both built our PC's for playing games, but recently he's kinda lost interest due to driving lessons hence offering me cpu, my motherboard is a GA-P35-DS3 and his is GA-P35c-DS3R. Yes, I have asked for advice in the past and it really doesn't do much, in fact, i've been hoping to offload it in order to get a E8400 possibly.

E6400 at 4Ghz

orthos stable? also what voltage?

I would be tempted as well but as said unless make sure it will do 4Ghz on your machine first.

Yeah that is a point, he's told me its 1.5v although i'm yet to see it, obviously im not gonna swap without seeing it in action first, but it is prime stable. I would like to check it in my machine first also, yes.

One of the reasons im undecided is because, im currently running my Q6600 at stock, but it seems to handle everything i throw at it easily, i don't play Crysis much either!!

EDIT: Mine runs at 39, 40, 36 and 35oC idle with stock cooler currently fitted!

If you're happy with your quad then leave it. High clock speed dual core will yield better frame rates in games but 2mb cache will hinder it a little.

Is your Q6600 really that bad in overclock? won't do 3Ghz with a bit of voltage?

With stock voltage, the best i can do is 2.9GHz stable, and 1.45v is required for 3.15GHz, but obviously, that will require a better cooler, and im not sure what wil fit in my CM Elite 330, that is up to the job, although i have wondered will upping the FSB and NB voltages help??

You reckon http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-039-TR&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=821 would fit in my case?

upping fsb and nb voltage probably won't do much good as 333FSB (3Ghz) is easy for a P35 on stock volt but you can try.

I'd probably just keep the Q6600 and run it at 3Ghz.
