They're essentially the same car, which is why i'm having a tough choice choosing which one I should have as my first car!
a lot of people recommended the Fiesta 1.25's. The problem is, I really don't like the way they look. If i'm going to be stuck with a car I want to like it! (It's like getting married to a woman you don't like! :p )

The car i'm getting would have to last through my degree, so thats 3/4 years.

I was looking at W (2000) reg's. A decent specced car of the three go for around £1,200 on Auto Trader. Although, the Polo generally being the more expensive one around £1500. And that's with power assisted steering, MOT, Tax, Full Service History.

My question is, are the three exactly the same? In that they share common faults, or do I need to watch out for specific stuff that will fail in the future?

They are largely the same - the bits that matter are the same on all 3. It's a case of driving all three and picking the one you prefer... IN THEORY.

IN PRACTICE...

The Skoda Fabia shares its platform ONLY with the 2002 onwards Polo, a car you wont find for £1200. Therefore mechanicaly at least the Fabia is a step above the earlier Polos. Ditto Ibiza - I dont think the newer Ibiza came in until again 02/03ish, and you wont get one of those for your budget either.

So for £1200, the Fabia is the newest generation car - the other two are older in every way.

I know what you mean. I was looking at the Fabia's and thought they seemed ahead of their age. I guess my best bet is probably test driving each one and seeing which one I like the most.

you like the looks of the fabia but not the fiesta? lol!

you can get a decent mk5 fez for that money now... you looked at this shape?

my first car was a 6N polo (up to 1999), and I'd highly recommend one if you can afford the insurance. The 1.4 16v is 100bhp and group 10 insurance but is great fun for a first car and they look ace when pimped out euro style.

they don't share the same gearbox/cambelt tensioner/pedal box issues that the newer generation (1999-2002) of polos and fabias have

I have an Ibiza 1.4 courtesy car at the mo and it's a great little motor & the engine is a peach.

Bit sparse but it certainly has the essentials.

go Skoda or seat when buying a budget car you don't need to be paying extra for a badge. Personally I'd get the skoda out of those two but I can't really justify it.
