Car insurance - can I cancel a policy?

On the 25/05/2007 my car was damaged in the company car park while it was stationery. So it's none fault. The person responsible was never found so I had to pay my £250 excess which the company did reimburse. The damage was in excess of £800 so that was my only option. I was lucky to get even that seeing as the company went in to bankruptcy a month later!

My insurance is due for renewal on the 30/09/2008. My question is - am I "allowed" to cancel a policy on the 25/05/2008 and then re-apply with a 1 years discount on the 26/05/2008?

Or are we simply not allowed to do this and I must wait until the policy is finished. Are we allowed to cancel policys? Or is there some charge? I am paying monthly by direct debit.

I am a bit noobish when it comes to insurance. In the 4 years I've been driving my car has been damaged FOUR times all non-fault. Twice were stationery and no one found. Third I was hit in the back at a roundabout. Fourth wasn't. So I am a bit miffed now that I still don't have any no claims and no fault of my own. :(

You wont be entitled to any no claims discount if you have made a claim on your policy, which you have

Then on the 30/09/2008 you will have 1yrs NCB. But only then. If you cancel before that date you will not get your 1yrs NCB.
