BRITAIN has bought 24 of the Australian-made Bushmasters

Isn’t there something we could have bought that’s built in the UK?

Then it'd break down all the time and fall to bits. :D
If it's reliable and saves lifes, I don't think it matters where they buy it.

I expect the germans will outdo the aussies soon enough, you know those crazy germans and their motoring.

Amazing technology in my opinion. Yes it is fair to echo the 'why is it not British/British-made?' sentiment, but the safety and welfare of our troops is of paramount importance and if this is the fastest most efficient way to get this kind of protective vehicle over to them, so be it. It really doesn't matter where the equipment comes from so long as it keeps our troops safe while they are doing their jobs.

I wasn’t complaining and like I said anything that help protect our troops I am all for, its just that I wouldn’t like the UK government buying this equipment from other countries when there is already something we can built here in the UK.

It’s like the fleet replenishment tanker that the government is planning on building abroad; I don’t see why when they could be built in the UK.

I am for the buying of foreign technology when there isn’t a fair priced British equivalent.

Speed > armour in that kind of situation. Rumours abound of anti-tank hit squads in some places, and apparently Sadr's forces salted roads with mines prior to coalition assaults in 2004. Can't verify this of course (there were no sources provided), but events like that probably prompted the use of mine-clearing\resistant vehicles...

If it will help out lads out there then so be it, at least they aren't American designed - would probably be more about 'how thick we can make this door panel' than 'is it going to be functional'.

Ironically its American vehicles that get beat up the most...the Iraqis are smart, they attack the rear armour and engine block, shoot from a high angle to hit the thinner top armour, or use mines\explosive traps.

Yes because you can easily out run a mine and roadside bomb...

Ambushes.

This is what's replacing the "Armored Land Rovers" (Called WMIKs [Weapons mounted installation kits])

doesn't seem to provide much cover for the troops.

It's not about that, it's about being able to traverse very awkward terrain at a decent speed.

Despite that, it's a huge improvement on our current WMIKs, which as you can see really are just modified Land Rovers.

A purpose built vehicle is far better.

Think they designed it with speed in mind, and the dual .50 calibers offer more firepower than your average Land Rover...

not really

They also used to have ones with automatic grenade launchers + machine guns in the back.

No point in having speed or a heavy calibre weapon if your brains have already been splashed onto your compatriot.
