hey

on behalf of a m8 of mine.....

gaming at 1280 x 1024 (probably even lower) on old game (call of duty united offensice(call of duty 1))

wanting the best possible fps.

he has an 8800GT now.

and has just got a 9800GX2 that has not arrived yet.

i have said that the GX2 will not make that much difference at that resolution. first of all am i right? i advised him to send it back but as it hasnt arrived yet i thought id test my theory first. and surely if it does make a difference it is not 300 quids worth.

thoughts?

thanks..

why's he even got a 8800gt if he only plays cod1 @ 1280x1024, overkill tbh. i don't see it making any difference at all like

well the reason i think for his upgrade was becuase he had bought a very cheap gt. wasnt performing very well (the PEAK one in the other thread i just made) ;)

my 8800gt gets around 333 fps usualy which is what most people prefer to use on the game. but his failed to get 250 so he went all the way and got a GX2 without looking into it first :|

thanks for feedback so far guys.

I hate to break it to both of you bu neither of you are even seeing anyhing over 60FPS, or 75FPS, unless you have some sort of fancy monitor that refreshes over 100 times a second. :p

With hat in mind, and to answer your question, he won't see any difference what-so-ever. Running FRAPS may give him higher numbers but he won't be seeing any extra frames.

Indeed but at a guess he is wanting stable high fps for the jumps you can make with the cod engine. And cod1 only use's one of my gpu cores maybe there is a patch out but i dont know of it.So a GX2 is way over kill for them said games.GT should own it at that res.Maybe he should try dx7 instead of dx9 in cod2 that will give him big gains fps wise.As for cod1/UO stopped playing them sometime ago had a 850 pe them times but would have thought the GT could bang out 333fps at that res with a few things turned down.Maybe its a cpu bottleneck?

 What are you talking about????. Only if using Vsync would your comment make sense and no one has mentioned Vsync.

Call of Duty series are frame locked at 91FPS but a quick maxfps command in the console sorts that out.

This is a completely ridiculous thread. Call of Duty 1??!!? 9800GX2!?!?!? I mean seriously!

Erm it's actually not. I'm not sure about Call of Duty United Offensive but I know for sure that the first Call of Duty game on the PC suffers on the G80 and G92 cores. I know this as I've played this title for years through the 9800Pro, X800XT, 7600GT, X1900XT and 2900Pro with no problems at all but my 8800GTX will produce stuttering and slowdown like I never have seen, even with a 3700+ San Diego CPU, 1gb of DDR400 and a 9800Pro it was smooth as silk. Even at 6xAA, 16AF forced on the X1900 was silky smooth. It's just the G80/G92 has a problem with this game that no driver has sorted out yet. My friend in Holland that is part of the same community actually swapped his 8800GT for a 3870XT due to this problem. 8600GT/GTS owners in the community shared these problems also.

There's a bunch of things you can do to help the problem but nothing has eradicated it yet. So it's not so much of ridiculous thread. Even if CoD United Offensive isn't affected the point I'm making is that the older version of the game has issues with G80/G92.

I'm not saying there aren't issue, but spending £300 on a graphic card for a game thats 5 years years old is shocking!

If it was the only game then I'd agree. However, even though I still play Call of Duty 1 online sometimes, I still play most other games that are out. When you buy a card, you want it to run all games. Not urinate all over Call of Duty 4 but the first game in the series doesn't run well at all.

he should get like 500 fps maybe even 1000fps on that rez with 8800gt no idea why he bought gx2. if he still dint got it tell him to change his mind and stay with gt and save some money or swap money that you bought gx to a decent monitor !!

my rool is if yo buy a 22" monitor for 250 £ u had to spend around the same amount on the card if you have 24" high rez monitor buy a gx2 but not on 19"

Without meaning to interrupt the OP's thread, i was just wanting to quickly ask.

What refresh rate do most moniters have.

E.G if i got an 8 m/s 60hz 19" LCD.

I think the answer's in your question, 60Hz.

I'm assuming the OP's mate wants to hit the 333fps mark which seems to offer some sort of advantage on some FPS games. Been massively discussed/argued on here before.

thanks for input lads.

yes he wants a minimum of 333fps.

His whole pc is fairly new and it has prety good hardware. quad core, 2gb ram etc so i dont think its a bottle neck.

as J.D said...

"Indeed but at a guess he is wanting stable high fps for the jumps you can make with the cod engine"

correct^;)

he also plays cod2 and cod4. although coduo is the game he plays competitively and the game he plays most often.

Another friend bought an 8800ultra for the same game not so long back. and he saw very little improvement on frame rates over his 7950 so he sold it.

mabye a good 7 series card would be the best choice for this game? although that would hammer the fps right down on cod4 and some of the newer game if he ever wanted to play them. il find out if SLi is an option as 2 x 7900GTX or something like that may do the trick.

thanks again.
