Tangi appreciation

Is it true no-one drives too close behind these in case the Plod on-board get bored with beating up whoever they've picked up and launch them out of the back whilst not bothering to actually pull over and stop first? :D

I've always called these 'piglets'

:/

*n

these were the 'pigs' that were used during the troubles by the army

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humber_Pig

lol - just read this bit

All developed for use in Northern Ireland:
Flying Pig: a normal vehicle with extending riot screens either side and the roof.
Holy Pig: rooftop hatch surrounded by perspex screen (see Popemobile)
Kremlin Pig: wire screening for protection against rocket propelled grenades (RPG-7)
Squirt Pig: fitted with a water cannon beside the driver for riot control.
Foaming Pig: fitted with a foam generator to kill the blast from bombs.

Im sure theres videos on you tube of conveys of them during july, around the 12th as always. If not im sure i could take one this year. 10 to 20 of them in a row driving down the road.

Are they still in use?

Yeah, as said they're pretty much the main police patrol vehicle although the preferred vehicle seems to be the standard police car now. All the Tangis are painted in the white and battenburg livery now. I preferred them in the grey paint - far more intimidating :D

When the big riots were kicking off in '96 and our main road was lined with burnt out lorries and cars, I remember one of these flying up the footpath at speed....on fire. For whatever reason it swerved off the kerb, tipped over and lay on it's side whilst it was pelted with petrol bombs and some gunfire. The cops just sat tight in it until the army turned up in a load of Saracens and got them out. Once the cops were out and the mob were held back far enough, they tied a rope to the Tangi and dragged it upright with a Saracen. After being on fire for the best part of 20 minutes and being pelted with gunfire, they drove it away :D

They are fantastic in my eyes! My dad used to drive one back in the day. And I agree with Scuzi in that they looked way more intimidating in the grey livery. Still used heavily in Carrickfergus. If anyone remembers the UDA trouble last July (I think) in the Castlemara estate here, my town was pretty much just filled with these on every other street corner (obviously more concentrated near that estate). I loved it!

One was parked outside my local Texaco garage - and I thought the Tangi appreciation thread might appreciate a photo of the insides. Unfortunately my photos are all blurred and crap :( I might post one or two later.

I love these machines though :D

Great motors, the only problem I can see is that a lot of the time they seem to have been deployed for the wrong tasks (they played a part in curbing car theft, but were basically laughed at, because they weighed 3 tonnes and couldn't keep up with a mobility scooter). But for riot/crowd control they do rock pretty hard.

There is somewhere out there on the net that shows the different versions ranging back to the originals that had only one rear door and looked a lot more menacing.
Funny thing is, that having grown up seeing them day in and day out they are no more menacing to me than a ford fiesta.
