Police in the Polish city of Lodz have introduced a radical scheme to cut the number of accidents involving boy racers.

The police let the boy racers speed through the city on streets that have been specially closed to other traffic.

It's hoped this plan will drastically cut the number of accidents involving young drivers at night by giving them somewhere they can let loose.

The first legal street races have already taken place and the police are encouraged by the results.

"We've come to an understanding with the organisers of illegal street races," says Lech Ryszewski, who is head of the Lodz Motoring Club.

"We have created a Street Legal section to organise races on closed-off public roads and the participants are obliged to make sure no-one organises races on other city streets."

This is what they did in the states in the 60s/70s. Set up a local drag that's 'open' a few nights a week.

Hell, you could do it here if you wanted.

Call it £10 per person for entry and £25 per car for unlimited runs and you'd be turning people away all summer.

By the time health and safety as well as the local NIMBYs have had their say you'd be lucky to get a scalextric set up in this country.

Agreed,. H&S and the nimby-ism would put pay to any form of legallised street racing in the UK. Shame, as i agree, its probubly a dam good way to control it. If you cant stop them racing, then give them somewhere safe(er) to do it...

There are RWYB events up and down the country already. All I am talking about is making a weekly (or twice weekly) event at an official venue.

OCUK roadtrip to poland. Its a great idea, but would never succeed over here due to the fact you couldnt get it started with all the h+s etc governing the public.

Is there any reason why you're talking about proper drag racing at proper venues (which have all of the appropriate safety facilities and insurance etc) and everyone else is talking about street racing?

Because the US response to 'street racing' years ago was to allow local drag strips to open.

It worked - people raced on the strips, it got the racers off the roads and made everything safer.

I explained this in my first post...
