Clutch shot?

On a Focus or Mondeo?

I'm free today so I'm going to have a little wander down to Mr Clutch get them to test it and see what they think.

don't use places like mr clutch they have incompetant apprentices doing jobs they don't put things back together proplery ie.. dont tighten out

i went to a place like this other day, he wanted £450 said its a very hard job blah blah and he wouldnt let me use my own parts.

my mate is 21 he did the job by himself on my old mondeo in 5 hours for £100.

tom just buy a LUK repset for about £100 and find a backstreet who'll fit it they'll probably want less then £100 labour

Went to Mr Clutch the mechanic said it was definetely "on it's way out" he said the biting point is at the highest possible (already knew this) and that it was slightly slipping.

Danny the guy didn't look like an apprentice if I'm honest he was about 40 and seemed to know what he was on about. :p

They wanted £320 to do it minus 100 if I supply my own parts. Needless to say I won't be going there.

fords will ask the same!!! but you expect that from fords...not other places :o

Sorry that £160 was for a mondeo...

That's incredibly cheap, take £50 or so out of the equation for a half decent clutch and that leaves very little for labour. Sure there are clutches available for the Mondeo fom £20 or so but I'd rather fit a decent one as it's not a regularly changed component.

£160 on a mondeo including parts?

bet that wasn't a 3 peice kit even so still a bargain, slave cyl's hardly ever fail on fords anyway

Never been to a Mr. Clutch before, but I've never heard anything good said about them, so I can't see me going them them in the future either.

Do you guys not worry about taking your car to some backstreet indy? I need a timing belt and tensioner doing but whats to stop them not even fitting one or not tensioning the belt properly. Then again Ford are too dear and places like National etc seem to have a bad reputation.

Indy != 'backstreet'

If an Indy worth it's salt messes something up, it's their reputation on the line. A big franchise doesn't care in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah thats why Ive been gathering some tools together. Going to start off small and do the brake discs and few few other bits. But theres no way I'd attempt something like the timing belt.

Good point, i never though about it like that.

Might be worth sticking with it if you can ignore it - a guy at work had a slip on his clutch for around a year before it finally gave up.

What sort of parking ticket did you get? Did you get a letter through the post, or did a warden do you? Might be able to dispute/just not pay it.

Nick,

It was a warden. The fee is 25 if I pay within 14 days and thereafter it is 50!

I think I will put up with the clutch may aswell get the money worth out of it. The only time it does annoy me is when it's hard to select the gear or it just thuds in/crunch as if I didn't even have a clutch!.

Ah - you'll probably have to pay then :(. £25 isn't too bad though. I got a £60 fine off a private company which I've simply not paid as there's no legal obligation to do so, but a parking warden and £25 sounds like the council. Not good on your birthday though :p

The clutch will probably last a while yet. Try blipping the throttle a little as you change down to match the revs. Should make your driving a bit smoother as you change down the gears, but critically will let you get a bit more life out of the clutch too.
