Whos ditching GX2 for GTX 280?

they will use less power than a 8800gtx. I'm not optimistic - as initial media reports state the cards run very hot. I'm leaning more towards the thought that the cards will probably be similar to an 8800GTX in power use and heat due to their onboard ability.
Rumor say the TDP is 240W+, that means the actual power used could be over 200W. That's a lot more than a 8800GTX.

Anyone got any links to these godly like cards? it appers that ive been living under a rock and not heard of them before this thread.

I'm not spending stupid amounts of money)

Me neither, and that's another important factor. Is it worth it? if a new card can do twice as much as my current card, then maybe it's worth it, but at the right price. Is it worth it at £500? I suppose that depends on how poor you are, or how poor you want to be, or both

a lot more than a 8800gtx? how so? in tests I've seen around the net, a 8800gtx is reported to be around 220w idle and 300w at load. Compare that to these rumours about the new card(s), then it doesn't seem too bad, does it? am I missing something?

8800 GTX has a TDP of 185W. So that would be around 150W it uses.

Sorry, it appears the tests I read were reporting load of the machine, not just the card. :o

this clears things up about the maximum power.

Let’s get a few things clear here. Under no circumstances can a G80 card consume more than about 225W. A simple calculus will prove that. As you know, a video card cannot drain more than 75W from the PCI-E slot. Add a maximum of 2 6-pin power connectors rated at 75W each and you’ll get a total of 225W.

Will be interesting to see whether this Nvidia PhysX thing takes off, if they get enough support from developers it might give people a reason with multi-slot boards to leave old gf8 cards in their rigs rather than offloading them.

I suspect it won't come fast enough however, might be something for a future generation though.

I'm selling my Honda VFR750 motorbike that I don't get chance to ride anymore and building a new rig out of hopefully the £1800 that I'll get for it. In it will be the best performing of the next gen cards.

Hopefully will be able to get a very nice set up out of £1800 especially as it doesn't have to include a monitor in that amount.

So looking at all guesses it will be a shiny GTX280, but might wait to see if EVGA do a SSC version of one.

The old rig in the sig, will then be recycled into a HTPC.

Taff

think it would be worth keeping a GT for that instead of selling?

provided i dont go ATI for my next card that is

Selling your bike :( no.

No, it's too much of an unknown quantity at the moment. It'd make a pretty expensive PhysX card too as I suspect you can still get a decent price for secondhand 8800GTs. Would be cool if we get a situation in the future though where we could make decent use of older cards rather than having to completely replace them.
