Hi all

Just a quick question

I had a play with a friends Canon 40D today and was really impressed, so much so i want one lol!

what i want to know is how much of a decent step up is the 40D from the 350D? and is it worth the £600 upograde price?

i have a range of lenses ranging from the kit 350D kit lens to a sigma 170 - 500m lens

i have been told that the lenses i have will not fit on the 1D and also i dont think i can stretch to afford a 1D!!!

any advice would be appeciated

The 350D was of the very first SLR beginers camera. Having the jump to a 1D is massive. I think a 40Ds a good step forward then onto something like a 5D.

i was told that the lenses i have wont work with the 1 D and i dont fancy splashing out on all new lenses after spending well over a grand on a 1D

so the technology in the 40D is definately a good step up and i will get better pics with the 40D than with the 350D

thanks again for the replies, looks like i may have to raid my bank then lol

whats the next best thing to a 40D? or equally as good equivalent

also, as i mentioned i have a number of sigma lenses to go with my 350 that will fit onto the 40 apart from an aftermarket kit lens, does anyone have any recommendations on a decent (possibly Sigma) aftermarket kit replacement lens (so 17 / 18 to **) length

I am looking at doing a leap from 400D to 40D and i think its better camera in terms of design and menus etc and a few extra features that i can justify the difference.

will just keep the 400d as a back up body.

is this the only advantage over the 350d?

i admit, the 40d does feel like a lovely camera, nice and solid! but will the quality of the pictures be better than a 350 (as in is the technology in the body a worthy upgrade)

its still a 10mp sensor but the image processor has definalty been improved. (digi logic III or whatever it is)

there are more focus sensors for big apertures. (more focus sensors than the 350D)

pc sync port (if you need it)
the screen alone over a 350d will blow you away.
top screen which i beleive the 350D has on the rear but the 400D has none.
Live view
I belive the dynamic range is also improved.
better weather sealing

these are the things that i can think of on the top of my head.

Just remember your remotes, batteries and grips cant be used. There is no IR remote option.

all sounds good to me.....just wondering if it actually is worth the £600 tp upgrade, or would i be better investing the £600 in lenses?

bearing in mind i do this as a hobby rather than a full time job!.....a hooby that i really really enjoy!

£600 seems a bit steep, you should be able to pick it up far cheaper from Kerso or another online retailer. I think OcUK have started selling camera goods so not allowed list or link to the shops.

I just found it for £510 (with Canon cashback offer) and I'm sure you could get it cheaper if you looked around.

what lenses do you have? if its just simply for better IQ then no its not worth it! £600 is L glass moeny and will provide a bigger improvment than a body.

Im investing in glass at the moment instead of body as better investment and dont lose value as much as body's

The question i would ask is what do you find lacking in the 350D to warrant an upgrade to the 40D? It is a much better camera but in the right hands, i suspect there's little you can't do with the 350D you can with the 40D. Personally, I never liked the 300/350 or 400D because of the handling/size so I started with the 20D. The autofocus is much better on the xxD series over the xxxD which is important to me. So depending on your photo style, taste etc, it may or may not be worth the £600.

Having said all that, i recently tried the 40D recently for a day worth of shooting, the 14bit AD is a huge step forward from the previous models. The tonal range is far far smoother and more organic than the previous chips - regardless 300/350/400/20/30D. It's far closer to my 5D then the previous models. So from a technical stand point, this alone is worth the investment for me. That plus the quieter shutter and better handling, more sorted highlight warning are also important and worthwhile to me. But these are more relavent to someone who's say has a 20D/30D wondering about the 40D.

350D to 40D is a different level of skill usage. If you don't think you have/need for a more advanced camera, then invest in lens and keep snapping away!

good luck.

I recently went from a 350D to the 40D am impressed. The best feature of the 40D over the 350D are

Larger brighter view finder
Larger rear screen
Better build both in terms of build and ergonomics

Also the colour slightly better which may be due to the 14bit colour and the focusing seems a bit better.

My main complaint would be that my old shutter release button does not fit the 40D which is perhaps more a complaint about the canon X00D range.. I don't understand why the on/off lever has two on settings. I know the second on setting gives you more controls but why not just have one on setting. The other complaint is that I don't have full control of my flash (430EX) from the camera but have to set stuff live second curtain flash on the flashgun.

Is the 40D worth an extra £600 probably not but you can get £100 rebate of the camera (or could when i brought it) and also you should be able to get £150 to £200 for the 350D mean it will cost you about £350 which is worth it in my opinion.

well i went and bought one :-P

am very impressed with the 40D....need to have a proper play still but so far very very nice

As far as lenses go, im currently saving up for a decent "walkabout" lens as i only have the kit lens from the 350d at the moment so that will have to go!

Other lenses i have are Sigma 105mm macro lens, 170 - 500mm DG lens, and a 70-300mm lens

P.S also saving for a wide angle lens too lol

i mainly do nature photography but also like macro, landscapes, nighttime shots, HDR, weather etc
