Boxter 3.2S or Z4 3.0?

there's me thinking buying a car should be about what it does for you, not what other people think of it.....

'poor mans porche' only goes as far as saying 'its cheaper than a 911'. nobody who's driven one (that means you obviously havent) seems to think on anywhere near the wavelength you do. the term im sure was coined by some scally corsa driving nothings who wouldnt even get the chance to drive one.

Can we please get over the poor man's Porsche thing and keep to the facts.

Basic psychology. Porsche cars are interpreted by many as the automatic car choice of the nouveaux riche. This could also be said about BMWs, but it's certainly more the case with Porsches. This gives them a specific image.

For those saying the Boxter is "too easily misinterpreted as a cheap version of the 911," please get a grip. The only reason they exist is so Porsche are able to have a slice of a different market where car prices are lower. I'm not saying they are bad cars, I'm not saying they are cheap cars but they are still targeted at the non-super car market; Not everyone can afford 911s. In the same way, Aston Martin will probably release a cheap car.

If you were stonking rich, you wouldn't buy a Boxter over a 911 would you? If you wanted the cabriolet aspect there's the 911 Turbo Cabriolet which is probably a rapist on crack.

*awaits with a wry smile prepared..*

And Tommy, BoxSter.

Your points about tarnished image; I've been thinking about this since the naming of the Roxster in particular. Porsche still make stonkingly good sports cars, just look at the Cayman S, the GT2 and 3RS.

Output has increased hugly since the late 80's, when porches were, indeed, relatively rare. And now as we know, they produce mid-range sports cars, SUVs and soon, 4 door saloons. Without these models Porsche as we know it probably wouldn't exist today. We might not have some of the amazing cars we see today, and we most certainly wouldn't see great cars like the Boxster, available at prices the average guy can afford.

Is image really more important than this? All I care is that I (as a regular guy) have a chance of driving a beautifully engineered flat-6.

Depends if you want a great car or to keep up down the Golf club. I know several former 911 owners who have bought and owned Boxsters and Caymans. I nearly bought a Cayman after my GT3 for example and would have been more than happy to have driven around in it.

Lol, they are aimed at completely different markets.

They are aimed at people who want a sports car.

The difference is one is substantially cheaper than the other and is aimed at people who want a sports car but cannot afford to buy from the market the 911 is in.

This is completely different to what Matt is saying about Golfs and Touregs.

seriously, get a clue mate

I challenge you to tell me what is wrong with what I'm saying.

I have a 3.0 Z4 - I like it... a lot - but then again I live in Essex ;)

I bought it over a 986 boxster s for a few reasons. At the time a facelifted car with the rear glass window (essential in my mind) would have cost £22/23k private for a nice one and the were generally poorly equiped with little more than the standard radio and maybe a multichanger. Litronic headlights (HID's in porsche speak) is something I really wanted yet not many to be found on the second hand market.

For 16k (private sale and I haggled him down as he needed the money) I found a nice tidy Z4 in a easy to maintain colour with all the bells and whistles (ex demo car every option bar a tv tuner and the silly luggage rack). It made the decision a no brainer, especially since I think the 987 boxster s makes the 986 look dated and a bit sad in comparision - its a much more modern car.

My next car will probably be a 3.4 boxster S once the prices come down to a reasonable level (25k). The porsche boxster s 986 is the better drivers car, its sadly dated though and everything is an optional extra - even traction control!

One thing to bear in mind - if you read up on the porsche watercooled engines on pistonheads its not unheard of for them to go bang, and the rear main oil seal usually weaps... budget £1k for a warantee from porsche every year and dont buy a car without the porsche 100+ (forget the actual number) point check being done - this will show if anything is wrong with the car and allow you to purchase the warantee. A genuine seller shouldnt mind. You wouldnt want to find yourself with a 8k repair bill for the engine letting go.

arguable, a lot of people will only class the 959, GT1 and carrera GT as real supercars as part of the definition of a supercar is that it must be mid-engined
