Looks like I can forget about getting a HD-DVD player

Now that Blu-Ray has become the sole 'Next Gen' format, everything will be out on it soon enough so theres no real reason to go HD-DVD unless you want to pick up a few bargains whilst they last..

That said, physical media is going to die either way

I don't get it....................

you were going to decide to get HD-DVD but now decided not to because the BR version has Easter Eggs?

You do know you can get a Hd-DVD drive + Transformers cheaper than a BR version of Transformers which is not out for a few months.

^ same had me eyes on a samsung dual drive but the place where i was going ot get it from had delevery in for them ranging from a couple of weeks to days constantly i thought bugger this & got an internal PC one which cost a lot less than that player would have

Can't wait for that to happen. Sick of replacing my collection every few years. Had them all on VHS, then all on DVD, now all on Blu-Ray. I'd rather pay on an iTunes based service and then be offered a cheap 'upgrade' fee to download a higher quality version as the technology improves in the future.

People keep banging on download media is the future, they seem to forgot that our current network just can't handle that, half dozen movies and i'll hit my cap. Our infrastructure needs to change first before download media will even take off.

I see your point but there's a risk that the company you buy them from makes a u-turn, like Microsoft have done with their DRM-enabled music store.

which it will do.........

eventually

Good luck with that.

If the government actually had any interest in communications they'd take after the Japanese and install fibre to every home in the UK. At cost.

I know this would cost billions.. but at least it would be better in the long run. Come on, annual maintenance on the shoddy 70's backbone costs enough per year..

Until the average connection speed of the UK / US home reaches 10MBit you can kiss the "digital delivery" idea goodbye.

As mentioned above, the ISPs of this country are just out to make money. Only a handful actually give you reasonable caps for the service, and even then it would equate to 25 decent sized films (on peak hours) a month.

I don't see the point of getting a combo HD-DVD drive when the format is dead.. Films out on HD will be out on Blu Ray soon enough imo.

I agree. There's also the fact that a lot of people LIKE to have a physical copy of things. Computers can crash and hard drives can be accidentally wiped, that doesn't happen to a disc on a shelf. Why do all of the people who think downloadable media is the way forward think that cd and dvd writers became so big? People like to back things up and have something that won't disappear if they get a virus and need to reformat.
In my opinion, it's much more convenient to pick up a dvd when I'm out than to use up my internet bandwith downloading something, and then needing an extra hard drive so I can back up all my movies "just in case".

I'm glad to hear that Transformers is coming to blu-ray, it was one movie I actually wanted to see in HD but I have a PS3, not an HD-DVD drive.

There are several problems with this at the moment:

1) Many stores only let you download the track once. iTunes should keep a huge log of every song you've purchased, and let you redownload them as many times as you wish.
2) DRM should be removed entirely. Until this happens illegal downloading will continue. I only EVER buy music off iTunes if it is in the + variant where DRM is removed.
3) If DRM removal does not happen, there should be legal guidelines stating that if the company goes bust or shuts down, there is a mechanism in place to ensure customers still have access to the music indefinitely.

I know I've posted it before but downloads on a hardrive don't look as impressive (or as geeky) as my tv show collection!

The biggest benefit of downloads for me is when there arn't enough sales to justify a physical release of a set but they can at least get it out there to the dedicated fans for a small fee online!
