Boxter 3.2S or Z4 3.0?

You can sometimes, for example if somebody arrives in an Impreza Sport covered in Turbo vents, a huge wing, some awful chrome wheels and fake WRC stickers all over it you know he has none :p

it has been shown in plenty of threads (to which said people say 'exception to the rule!!') that rich people do not just buy the best that can be afforded!

Yes most wealthy people do buy what they can afford and dont plump for a cheaper car and dont think about what the car's necessary attripbutes are. I SERIOUSLY dont think counting peoples threads on here is a measure, this forum doesnt have a measure of people which represent the general public.

i didnt say that people who buy very expensive cars do not have a grip on spending either.

This is implied.

I believe what I said above, that most wealthy people do buy cars based on cost and status, therefore is opposite to your opinion and therefore in your book can come under 'not having a grip on spending'. No?

Why would someone with money choose a more expensive one? purely because it costs more?

Yes.

I know over the internet things can sound pretty abrupt but I'm only giving my opinion on Car Buyers and not trying to ruffle any feathers :)

I've been doing some surveying of this "Boxster is a poor man's Porsche thing". Now this is based on my mates and the local pub and has some sweeping generalisations(apologies in advance for the sexist views) in there for good measure, but I reckon it is a pretty good representation of the country's views:

1. Most women, who don't know all that much about cars go, "Oooh it's a sporty blue car and it looks cool and is open top." So that's 50% of the population who don't share the view of it being a poor man's Porsche. They don't even know the difference between models, and need to have the fact it is a Porsche pointed out to them.

2. Of the men, those who know nothing about cars go, "It's a Porsche-cool". So they don't view it as a poor man's anything

3. They guys who know a fair bit about cars and consider them enthisiasts go something along the lines of, "One of the best handling cars out there and a great little roadster. Hope you've got the S with a manual box."

4. The remaining guys think they know a lot about cars, and base all they know on perfprmance cars from having been a passenger on a frequent basis in their mates Mitsubishi Evo or perhaps they own a hot hatch. Or God forbid use the interweb or MAx Power magazine as their sole source of information. They do indeed think it is a poor man's 911. However the one thing they all have in common is that they have never been in one, nor a 911 for that matter.

So we can see it is only category 4 that has this view and I reckon accounts for about 10% of the adult population. The thing is, there a lot of people in category 4 who we motors forum frequenters meet either online or in real life down the pub, so the view seems disproportionately common.

I cannot afford a new modeo atm, let alone a 15 yo porsche of any description, i prefer the looks of a z4, i am sure all porsches are amazing to drive, but i personally would prefer a 6/7 yo 911 to a boxster, i know that tommyg got a caning for it, but seriously i think that however nice they are they are too expensive to be accessible and too cheap to be under the same badge as a porsche.

I think they are a poor mans porsche, but i do not think they are a poors mans car, i think for what they cost i would rather get something a bit special and different as that is no doubt half the reason people pay the premium.

get the z4 it's what you want, take them for a drive and make your own mind up.

edit:and i have been in a 911 as my dad had one for a few years....nice car, very fast, but the handling is unforgiving.

if someone would buy something over another purely because it costs more they must be pretty stupid.

the only people I know who would do that are arrogant and have huge ego's, they also like boasting about how rich they are and how much things they own cost. Luckily only about 2% of the loaded people I know are like that

tbh

THAT is very nice!

Looks wise Z4, driving wise Boxster.

Super Edit - Fox, can you fit facelift rear lights onto prefacelift Z4s?

and if image is such an issue, would it matter that the only people I know with a z4 are a female hr manager, a female hairdresser and a homo? :D

That pic of the Z4 reminds me that roadsters are the only body style where I can tolerate a non-integrated radio ariel. (I assume that is what it is).

there are millions of women, gays, hairdressers, old people and young people that drive....mondeos, does that make it any less of a car?

Sports cars do appeal to women though - but this is something which affects the Boxster as much as the Z4. This is another reason why it isn't neccesarily a poor mans 911, your average female Boxster buyer has no interest in the abilities of a 911.

nothing could make mondeos any less of a car than they already are in my opinion, so that's not a very good comparison

Are you for real?

There are way too many keyboard warriors and way too much aggression in the 'motors' section of the forums. You don't find it anywhere else, not even in Speaker's Corner!!

If someone says "my ford focus is faster than an M3" the mature way is to politely tell them why they are wrong. The way of you guys is to insult them to a quite frankly pathetic level whilst rarely actually offering an explanation or opinion as to why you are getting so aggravated. Not to mention pretentious comments with wealth implications like "what do you drive then?" I might as well reply asking you the value of your house, equally as pathetic.
