Oil Level advice - '99 Mondeo

Hello all,

We done the head job on me dad's mondeo over the weekend.

The problem was - The car was mis-firing when it got hot.... I went to change the Spark Plugs and found that 1 and 4 were covered in oil.

....So we took the head off - Fitted a new head gasket and stem seals - Got the head skimmed (21 thou taken off) and put it all back together.

Put in new oil and filter and anti-freeze etc... But something doesn't make sense to us.

The 'Autodata' books show that the 1999 2.0L Mondeo engine should take 4.25 Litres of oil. However, we put in 3.5 Litres and the oil level on the dip stick is showing way over the mark...??

Any ideas? ...or what could I do to check it further?

One theory was the car could have the wrong dip stick in it..? is there anyway I could check / confirm this?

Also 4.25l sounds about right to me. Certainly over 4l goes in when I do an oil change.
 
Don't forget a dry empty engine has to fill all the oilways, the oil pump and the filter. That probably makes up the extra 3/4 litre.

Seems like a drastic move without any further evidence! Did you check the compression? Are you sure the oil wasn't already sitting in the spark plug wells from a leaking cam cover? Also 1 & 4 share a coil in the coil pack, which do have a habbit of breaking down as they get older...

As for the oil, if the engine has not been run then it will take a fair bit of it to fill the oil galleries and filter.
 
Misfire on a 4 cylinder Mondeo is normally the coil pack - had it on mine - so quite why you thought head gasket first of all I'm not sure?
